RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents and deals with the methodologies and

research design of the study. This part also includes the sample size,

sources of data, respondents of the study, data gathering procedures, and

instruments to be used in collecting the data of the study.

Research Method

This study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, because according

to Johnson, Onwuegbuzie, and Turner (2007), it incorporated the diverse

perspectives, qualitative and quantitative viewpoints, data collection, and

analysis, and reference techniques. A carefully crafted mix methods using

both qualitative and quantitative study to determine and describe the current

problem present in armchair furniture and additionally to inform the design

of the armchair. Qualitative data will be collected through surveys and

interviews with the art students and faculty members to gain insights into

their specific needs and preferences regarding in seating options. This

minimized the weakness of the individual approaches and it also increased

both the validity and reliability of the evaluation data (Johnson et al., 2007).

Quantitative data will be collected through ergonomic assessments of

current seating options, which will provide information on the physical

support, comfort and functionality needed for art students.

The strong point of the qualitative research is that the participant

observation, face to face communications using interviews and the focus

group sessions provided information about the “armchair” design issues

relating in doing art and drawing projects.

The knowledge learned from the study is assumed to provide

purpose and function for the art students in College of Industrial Technology

in Bicol University to have a functionable furniture can boost their

productivity doing art’s projects and develop more the skills. The researcher

can discover to provide strategies that the furniture provide function as well

as the perceived benefits and challenges in students lifestyle.

Sources of Data

The primary sources of data for this research will be the accumulated

responses of selected art students of Bicol University in the College of

Industrial Technology a State University in Legazpi City Albay, Philippines

established in 1961. The researchers will also provide secondary data from

national and international research journals and studies and other reliable

materials from the internet which are useful and timely relevant in providing

important insights in relation to the present study.

Respondents of the Study

In conducting interviews, the researchers should have criteria on

how to select the possible participants of the study. The possible

respondents for the study will be curated through the assistance of the

BUCIT Registrar office in gathering conveniently the registered art student

population in the College of Industrial Technology preferably has a units and

credits in designing, manufacturing, producing, and selling various types of

products that utilize art as one of their prominent structure in creating a

product and projects.

All the participants were selected through random sampling. This

sample method is conducted where each member of a population has an

equal opportunity to become part of the sample. To conduct this sampling

strategy, the research defined the population first, listed down all the block

population and respective courses has a unit in making art. In addition, the

review was guided by a document review frame that indicated what was

relevant and what was not. Interviews, focus group, survey questionnaires,

and data from observation were used to gather information, as shown in

Table 1.

The preferred sampling methods for quantitative studies are those

that will enable researchers to make statistical inferences from the sample

to the population (Lund Research, 2012).

Research Instruments

The research instruments used in the study are the art related

students in the College of Industrial Technology in Bicol University. The data

collection methods used were participant observation, face to face

interviews and a focus group session, a structured questionnaire was

created for the art related students. These were formulated by the

researcher and were properly validated by the experts. The primary aim of

the questionnaire is to determine the strategy used by the researchers of

Bachelor in Industrial Design of Bicol University in the College of Industrial

Technology to overcome the challenges and promote a new well design arm

chair intended for art courses.
