Comments on Design of Substructure foundation of Viaduct (Dn no 18R054-SDN-VD1-SUB-01/02/03)

1. Drawing for various substructure foundation components required for relating design considerations,
understanding & comprehensive checking.
2. Detailed bearing arrangement and configuration (for 3 span continuous ) shall be provided for
relating design considerations, understanding & comprehensive checking of all substructure
components.
3. As per Para 3.2 & 3.3 ,Slab and WC acting as UDL, distribution factor/load distribution shall not be
same for all bearings . Factors will also be different on consideration of eccentricity due to curvature.
4. Para 3.4:- Live Load reaction calculation on bearings shall be rechecked/submitted in STAAD or
established by other suitable methods. For ex. As per Case 2, 2 70R loading,(Refer IRC 6 table 6A,
SLno 3 Case 3 diagram), what will be the impact on middle bearing having uplift and extreme end
bearings with maximum reaction.
5. Para 3.3: Crash barrier load calculated for one span(both sides) = 561KN, Considered load in STAAD
and design =280KN (140x2) for one span.
6. Para 3.5:- Bearing Long Force- Dead Load (DL + SIDL + WC) depicted as 5212KN, whereas as per Load
breakup (4522(DL)+561(SIDL)+826(WC)) = 5909KN.
7. As per Para 3.7 and STAAD model, Long wind applied on one pier. Should be applied on both.
Secondly, check should be provided for Transverse Wind Load on Pier > Longitudinal Wind on Pier.
8. As per Para 3.8, Detailed plan configuration of (3 span continuous) bearings should be provided for
proper understanding of calculations along with basis of consideration of Fh/5 and Fh/3 for two
cases. Relieving/restoring effect on longitudinal moment should be avoided due to bearing forces on
EJ piers. How bearing friction is generated under fixed bearing (schematic diagram and table) should
be justified; as per IRC and general mechanics, bearing friction is generated only under free bearings.
9. Temperature Load case/effect shall be considered for portal as per IRC 6:2017 Cl 215.
10. Differential settlement shall be considered for portal structures.
11. Secondary effect and moments(Moment due to slenderness) shall be checked and considered for
substructure design (especially for Pier design) as per IRC guidelines.
12. As per Para 7, Design Loads and Load combinations considered from STAAD(or other calculation) is
for the lesser critical pier. Design should be done for critical portal leg. Vertical or Axial force shall be
checked for the alternate leg which is almost twice the value of Live Load depicted in design
summary table. Also for centrifugal force and Wind trans load, the alternate portal leg has downward
force whereas design is done considering uplift force.
13. Sufficient allowance shall be provided for design load calculation of deck slab while designing
foundation and substructure, along with suitable checks (105m continuous deck). So that there is no
problem occurred/modifications required in future for substructure/foundation already done.
