1.0 SCOPE
This procedure covers the installation & testing of following Cathodic Protection Systems shall be
implemented by the EPC Contractor of F&C Department at Halfaya Oil Field. This procedure also covers the
corrosion monitoring that is the installation & testing of Corrosion Probe and Corrosion Coupon:

5.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR CATHODIC PROTECTION:
PetroChina “Specifications” & “NACE SP‐169” both define the same Criteria. Contractor shall
follow the following criteria for the design and the testing of Cathodic Protection.
‐850 mV (CSE) with CP Applied : Section 6.2.2.1.1, NACE SP‐169
A negative (Cathodic) potential of at least ‐850 mV with CP applied. This potential is measured with respect
to a saturated Cu / Cu SO4 solution reference electrode containing electrolyte. It is referred as On‐
Potential.
Polarized Potential of ‐850 mV (CSE) : Section 6.2.2.1.2, NACE SP‐169
A negative polarized potential of at least ‐850 mV relative to a saturated Cu / CuSO4 reference electrode.
Polarized Potential is measure when all current sources are off. It is referred as “Off‐Potential” & “Instant
Off‐Potential”.
100 mV of Polarization : Section 6.2.2.1.3, NACE SP‐169
A minimum of 100 mV of Cathodic Polarization between the structure surface and a stable reference
electrode contacting the electrolyte. Difference between On‐Potential & Off‐Potential shall not be less than
100 mV.
6.0 SACRIFICIAL ANODE CATHODIC PROTECTION (SACP) FOR BURIED PIPE
6.1 Installation of Sacrificial Anode for buried pipe:
6.1.1 Material inspection shall be completed prior to installation. RFI shall be raised and shall
be signed by concerned PMC engineer. Material shall comply with the datasheet and the
specifications. Form IR‐01 shall be filled that is attached with ITP.

6.1.2 Contractor shall install Sacrificial Anode at the locations (depth and the distance) as per
drawing.
6.1.3 Contractor shall also follow the manufacturer instruction for the installation of Sacrificial
Anode.
6.1.4 Remove the pipe coating and expose the metal for cable connections for area 50 mm x
50 mm approximately.
6.1.5 Thoroughly clean the exposed area with power brush and then roughen the bright metal
with sand paper for better adhesion.
6.1.6 Connect the cable with pipe using thermite / pin braze welding. Use safety googles and
take safety measures during welding.
6.1.7 Check the strength of weld connection by hitting with ½ Kg copper headed hammer.
6.1.8 The weld connection and surrounding coating shall be thoroughly with power / wire
brush.
6.1.9 Use Valspar Corporation Pipeclad Green Patch Kit for coating repair. Contractor to follow
instructions of Valspar for patch repair.
6.1.10 After patch repair holiday test shall be carried out at 15.0 kV.
6.2 Inspection & Testing of Sacrificial Anode for buried pipe:
6.2.1 Contractor shall raise RFI for the witness of Holiday Test and get it signed from PMC.
6.2.2 Contractor shall raise RFIs for all “W” & “H” points specified in PetroChina Standard ITP
and shall attach inspection checklist as well. Contractor shall fill the form IR‐08 in
attached ITP.
6.2.3 Inspection & Testing shall be carried out as per following:

7.0 ICCP – IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION FOR BURIED PIPE:
This section covers the RTU installation, deep‐well drilling, anode installation & ITP for Impressed
Current Cathodic Protection.
7.1 Transformer Rectifier Unit (TRU) Installation
7.1.1 Contractor shall raise RFI for Material Inspection of TRU prior to installation.
7.1.2 Check the TRU Output Voltage & Current rating as per datasheet.
7.1.3 Verify that the IP Rating of TRU, it shall be IP‐45.
7.1.4 Contractor shall complete cable termination, AC & DC cables are routed through separate
conduits.
7.1.5 Cable connection with Pipe & repair of coating patch shall be completed as specified
above at sections from 6.1.4 to 6.1.10.
7.1.6 Contractor shall raise RFIs with checklist as per ITP and fill the form IR‐02.

7.2 Deep Well Drilling
7.2.1 Contractor shall perform drilling as per details in the drawing for location diameter, and
depth.
7.2.2 A surface casing larger than the bore diameter shall be set to a depth of approximately 5
meter.
7.2.3 All data shall be recorded during drilling like date, time, depth, formation (clay, sand,
rock, water etc).
7.2.4 Contractor to fill the Form IR‐03 that has been attached with ITP available in Appendix‐
2.
7.3 Deep Well Anode Installation
7.3.1 Check the type of anode and size according to the datasheet and specification.
7.3.2 Lower each canister into hole using supporting rope. The preferred method is to lower
each canister using the wire rope tied to the canister handle. The lowering of each
canister can be carried out using an A‐Frame with pulley or crane.
7.3.3 Anode installation shall be carried out as per approved construction drawings.
7.3.4 Contractor shall take extra care to avoid anode cable damage during installation.
7.3.5 Ensure that canister is located vertically and shall remain at the center of borehole.
7.3.6 Carbon backfill with a uniform low resistivity should be installed inside the hole until the
top anode is adequately covered.
7.3.7 The coke backfill shall be allowed to settle for 24 hrs. prior to testing for resistance
measurement.
7.3.8 Resistance Measurement – Measure and record resistance of each anode and the whole
ground‐bed to remote earth.
7.3.9 Reading shall be taken by contractor’s Cathodic Protection in charge and shall be
recorded and witnessed & signed by PMC.
7.3.10 Anode Junction Box – Install Anode Junction Box and connect anode cable and ensure
that it is correctly labeled as per drawing.
7.4 Test Post Installation
7.4.1 Contractor shall install “Potential Test Posts” for single well “Flowlines” & gathering
“Trunklines” at every “1 km” intervals or at an interval as specified in the drawing.
7.4.2 Contractor shall install “Potential Test Posts” at “2 km” interval for “Export Pipelines” or
at an interval as specified in the drawing.
7.4.3 Contractor shall install “Current Test Posts” at “10 km” interval for “Export Pipelines” or
at an interval as specified in the drawing.
7.4.4 Contractor shall install the test post with concrete foundation; the size of concrete
foundation shall be as specified in the drawing. Backfill earth shall be compacted so that
posts are rigid and stay vertical.
7.4.5 Test Posts shall also be installed at the both sides of road crossing. Sacrificial Anode shall
be provided and shall be connected with the metal casing used for road crossing.
7.4.6 Cable connections at pipeline & test post & anode shall be tight and rigid. Continuity Test
shall be conducted to verify proper connection of cables.

7.5 Inspection & Testing for ICCP for buried Pipeline:

8.0 CORROSION COUPON & CORROSION PROBE FOR PIPELINE:
8.1 Installation of Corrosion Coupon:
8.1.1 Contractor shall raise RFI for Material Inspection prior to start installation and ensure that
incoming material is as per datasheet & specifications.
8.1.2 Ensure that Coupon Holder size / type is matching with the information the drawing &
datasheet.
8.1.3 Contractor shall be careful and record the correct Sr. No. & Weight of the coupon in the
report.
8.1.4 Ensure that narrow edge of coupon shall be in line with flow direction OR Ensure that
broad face of strip coupon does not confront with flow direction.
8.1.5 Contractor shall make sure that marking has been scribed / done on 2 inch access fitting
and on the solid threaded plug for the confirmation of correct orientation of coupon.
8.1.6 Ensure that coupon shall not touch with coupon holder to avoid galvanic corrosion.
8.1.7 Ensure that Self‐Locking Nuts are used when coupon connected with holder.
8.1.8 Contractor shall use Ant‐Seize compound on the fitting threads and on the locking pin
threads.
8.1.9 Contractor shall take photographs as an evidence for correct installation.
8.2 Installation of Corrosion Probe:
8.2.1 Contractor shall raise RFI for Material Inspection prior to start installation and ensure that
incoming material is as per datasheet & specifications.
8.2.2 Ensure that probe size / type is matching with the information provided in the drawing
and datasheet.
8.2.3 Intelligent Interface Unit (IIU) – This is optional; it is required if we have online
monitoring.
8.2.4 Internal Corrosion Management Server (ICMS) ‐ This is optional; it is required if we have
online monitoring.
8.2.5 Ensure that testing / commissioning has been completed as per vendor
recommendations.
8.2.6 Ensure that software has been installed in English version, if applicable.
8.2.7 Commissioning Spares – Ensure that 02 years commissioning spares handed‐over to
production / end user.

8.3 Inspection & Testing of Corrosion Coupon & Corrosion Probe:

9.0 CATHODIC PROTECTION FOR TANK / VESSEL/ EQUIP:
This section covers the followings:
SACP – Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection – Tank Internal
ICCP – Impressed Current Cathodic Protection – Tank External
9.1 SACP – Internal ‐ Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection for Tanks, Vessels & Equipment.
9.1.1 Ensure that type, size & weight of Sacrificial Anode is as per drawing / datasheet. Ensure
that Material Inspection is complete and RFI is already signed by PMC.
9.1.2 Contractor shall install the anodes at intervals as per drawing at tank internal (bottom
plate & shell).
9.1.3 Anode shall be installed at a minimum of 200mm away from tank welding joint.
9.1.4 Anode support shall be welded with bottom plate & shell as per drawing and as per
recommendations of vendor.
9.1.5 For small tanks where using SACP for protection of tank external bottom plate, ensure
the anode installation and quantity is as per approved drawings. Anode cable joints with
proper insulation shall be checked to avoid loose connections.
9.1.6 External Protection ‐ Most of the cases in bigger tanks the external protection is with
ICCP having MMO Anode & Ti Bar grid installation. However, in some of the small tanks,
there may be SACP for tank external instead of ICCP depending on the tank design.
Contractor therefore shall perform installation as per design & drawing.
9.2 ICCP – External ‐ ICCP for Tanks, Vessels & Equipment.
9.2.1 Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) Anode & Titanium Conductor Bar Grid Installation:
9.2.1.1 Contractor shall get the material inspection done and get the RFI signed by PMC
prior to start installation of anode.
9.2.1.2 Contractor shall install MMO Anode & Titanium (Ti) Bar in grid as per drawing and
shall ensure that location & depth as shown in the drawing.
9.2.1.3 The Coke Layer shall be laid along the MMO Anode & Titanium Bar as per
dimensions shown in the drawing.
9.2.1.4 Titanium Conductor bar shall be placed under MMO Anode
9.2.1.5 “MMO Anode” & “Titanium Conductor” grid shall be welded using Resistance
Spot Welding at 02 places at each crossing.
9.2.1.6 Cable & Titanium Bar shall be terminated and connected with special connectors
supplied by vendor.

9.2.1.7 Reference Cell – Reference Cell shall be placed in the sand layer with horizontal
orientation. Installation profile, intervals and quantity of cells shall be as per
drawing.
9.2.1.8 Reference Cell shall be saturated with water prior to installation.
9.2.1.9 Negative cable connection to tank shall be tight and rigid and as per details shown
in the drawing.
9.2.2 Transformer Rectifier Unit (TRU) Installation ‐ ICCP of Tank:
Contractor shall follow the same steps as specified above at Section 7.1.
9.2.3 Test Post Installation ‐ ICCP for Tank:
Contractor shall follow the same steps as specified above at Section 7.4.
9.3 Inspection & Testing for the ICCP of Tanks / Vessels:

10.0 COMMISSIONING OF CATHODIC PROTECTION:
Testing & commissioning for the Cathodic Protection shall follow the Acceptance Criteria
specified in the Section 5.0
10.1 On Potential:
A negative (Cathodic) potential shall fall between ranges from ‐850 mV to ‐1100 mV with CP
applied. This potential is measured with respect to a saturated Cu / Cu SO4 solution reference
electrode containing electrolyte. It is referred as On‐Potential. The maximum range shall not
exceed ‐1100 mV to avoid protection as specified in section 6.0 of document no. HFY‐GEN‐CP‐SPC‐
0012, Specification for Cathodic Protection for buried pipeline.
10.2 Off Potential:
A negative polarized potential shall be minimum ‐850 mV to a saturated Cu / CuSO4 reference
electrode. Polarized Potential is measure when all current sources are off. It is referred as “Off‐
Potential” & “Instant Off‐Potential”.
10.3 100 mV Polarization:
A minimum of 100 mV of Cathodic Polarization between the structure surface and a stable
reference electrode contacting the electrolyte. Difference between On‐Potential & Off‐Potential
shall not be less than 100 mV.

"W" - WITNESS POINT - Work shall be witnessed for the inspection stage. Contractor shall notify the
COMPANY / PMC and raise RFI.
"S" - SURVEILLANCE - Surveillance can be carried out for on-going activity but formal notification and RFI is
not required.
"R" - REVIEW - Document shall submitted for review and approval through transmittal. Work shall not be
proceeded unless contractor has received Code-A / Code-B from PMC / COMPANY.
"RFI" - REQUEST FOR INSPECTION - Contractor shall submit the FRI along-with their inspection
notification.

Note :
1. Contractor to raise RFI for all "H" & "W" points that comes under PMC responsibility column.
2. Contractor shall attach "Inspection Reports" of ITP along-with RFI.
3. PMC to complete the "Inspection Checklist" attached with RFI.
4. PMC is to ensure that all inspection record is complete and has been placed in MC / PA / Dossiers.
"W" - WITNESS POINT - Work shall be witnessed for the inspection stage. Contractor shall notify the
COMPANY / PMC and raise RFI.
"S" - SURVEILLANCE - Surveillance can be carried out for on-going activity but formal notification and RFI is
not required.
"R" - REVIEW - Document shall submitted for review and approval through transmittal. Work shall not be
proceeded unless contractor has received Code-A / Code-B from PMC / COMPANY.
"RFI" - REQUEST FOR INSPECTION - Contractor shall submit the FRI along-with their inspection
notification.
