ANSWER - 2

Why is vegetable oil NOT considered a trans fat ?

- Its alkene bond is cis.

Explanation

Fats contain long hydrocarbon chains, which can be either unsaturated, i.e., have double bonds, or
saturated, i.e. have no double bonds.

Vegetable oils or vegetable fats are fats extracted from seeds or from other parts of fruits.

Vegetable oils are unsaturated fatty acids which generally have cis configuration as opposed to trans
configurations in Trans fats.

Trans fat or trans fatty acids, is a type of unsaturated fat that occurs in small amounts in nature and
are mainly produced industrially from vegetable fats.

Partial hydrogenation of the unsaturated vegetable fat converts some of the cis double bonds into
trans double bonds by an isomerization reaction which yields a trans fat.
