CRYSTALLIZATION
Tutorial 1
A feed to a cooling crystallizer is 1000 lb/hr of 32.5 wt%
MgSO4 in water 120˚F. The solution is cooled to 70˚F to form
crystals of heptahydrate. The magma at 70 ˚F consists of
crystals of the heptahydrate and mother liquor of 26 wt %
MgSO4. Assume that no water is vaporized. The specific heat
of the feed is 0.72 btu/lb˚F. The heat of crystallization is -23.2
Btu/lb of heptahydrate.

a) Calculate the yield of crystals

b) Estimate the heat removal rate in Btu/hr.
Tutorial 2
Magnesium sulphate heptahydrate (MgSO4∙7H2O) is one of the
primary mineral ingredients to produce livestock feed. A hot
solution from an evaporator containing 2268 kg of MgSO4 solution at
327.6 K having a concentration of 48.2 kg MgSO4/100 kg total H2O is
fed to a cooling crystallizer. It is then cooled to 293.2K. The
solubility of the crystal at 293.2 K is 35.5 g MgSO4/100 g total H2O.
Molecular weight of MgSO4 is 120.4 g/mol. The average heat
capacity of the feed solution is 2.93 kJ/kg.K. The heat of solution at
293.2K is -13.31 x 103 kJ/kg mol MgSO4.7H2O

a) Calculate the yield of crystals obtained if no water is evaporated

on cooling. How much water needs to be removed from the
hydrated crystals product by drying to obtain anhydrous crystal?

b) Determine the total heat absorbed for producing heptahydrate

crystals.
Tutorial 3
A batch of 1000 kg of KCl is dissolved in sufficient
water to make a saturated solution at 363 K, where
the solubility is 35 wt% KCl in water. The solution
is cooled to 293 K, at which temperature its
solubility is 25.4 wt%.

a) What is the weight of water required for

solution and the weight of crystals of KCl
obtained?
b) What is the weight of crystals obtained if 5%
of the feed evaporates on cooling?
Tutorial 4
A hot solution of Ba(NO3)2 from an evaporator contains 30.6
kg Ba(NO3)2/100 kg H2O and goes to a crystallizer, where
the solution is cooled and Ba(NO3)2 crystallizes. On
cooling, 10% of the feed evaporates. For a feed solution of
100 kg total, calculate the following:
a) The yield of crystals if the solution is cooled to 290 K
(17˚C), where the solubility is 8.6 kg Ba(NO3)2/100 kg
total water.
b) b) The yield of crystals if cooled instead to 283 K, where
the solubility is 7.0 kg Ba(NO3)2/100 kg total water.
