Service Learning Experience Reflection

After seeing the many ways that virtual reality(VR) was being used in education, I

decided to base my SLE off of that. I wanted to see how students would react to VR and how it

would work in a classroom environment. VR offers many apps that can be used to teach students

many subjects such as art, science, and history. As VR progresses it offers the potential for

revolutionizing the way students are taught and how they learn.

One of the obstacles that I had to face was deciding which virtual reality headset to buy. I

wanted a headset that would be convenient to use in a classroom setting so I decided to get the

Samsung Gear VR. That way I could use my phone to more easily enable students to use virtual

reality. After I got the headset I needed to decide what classroom to take it to. The best option

was taking it to an art class since I had an amazing app that would change how students create

art. Most students see art class as unnecessary so I wanted to see how students reacted to using

VR for art. First, I did a presentation explaining what VR was and how it could be used in

education. Then, students were instructed to draw something while in VR. Finally, they took a

survey reflecting on their experience with virtual reality.

Allowing students to use VR and seeing their reactions showed me that VR will be useful

for teaching future generations of students. Its many features and apps open up new opportunities

for learning. We have only scratched the surface of VR and its use in today’s world. With time,

VR will be an even more immersive experience that truly makes you feel like you’re somewhere

else.

Next time I need to conduct a SLE I will take more data on my observations. I will make

charts and graphs highlighting any improvements seen in whatever it may be that I’m

researching. This will I can reflect on whether I made an impact or not.
