My Students
My students from the Archer Heights Neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. They are part of a pilot program that
helps students that would traditionally be passed over for entrance into Advanced Placement Courses. This
program gives children from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds an opportunity to grow from the rigorous
curriculum connected with an Advanced Placement course. While my students are excited to learn and grow from
this experience, they are inexperienced with Honors or Advanced Placement Courses. A majority of students are
entering this Senior Level AP class from a non-honors tracked course.
My Project
When asked why he chose AP, one of my struggling students scoffed and stated: "I didn't, AP chose me." Through a
pilot program at my school, a majority of my students were selected to participate in my AP Literature and
Composition class, a majority of these students are moving into this college-level course directly from a "non-
honors" tracked course.
Due to this non-traditional elevation, many students have internalized negative self-talk related to their ability to succeed
within this seemingly impossible course.
As we have worked together throughout the start of the year, students are coming to see that while they are able to
build their analytical skills, the notion of the AP Exam looms over them. They are unfamiliar with the format, the
vocabulary, the academic vocabulary as well as the timed format.
Whenever I bring up the exam, groans fill the room. "I mean...WE don't have to take it?" The "we" of course, refers
to students that feel like "AP chose them"

Albert offers my students ALL of these features. They are able to see that while they may not have entered the
classroom having had the traditional training of advanced tracked courses, they are able to PRACTICE and GROW
from their experiences with the Albert platform.
