ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

First, I want to thank God for the health and strength and my mathematics teacher,
Miss Leah Gregg for helping me with my School Based Assessment. I would also
like to thank my mother and friends for encouraging me to do the SBA. This
assessment completion was only successful because of the support I received.

PROJECT TITLE

How much money do students spend on a daily basis?

INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE OF STUDY
Our school is a residential campus and therefore students live here throughout the
week and weekend. I noticed parents will send their child to school with money
and most students go through the money quickly. I decided to do a project to help
track and document where students are spending most of their money. To collect
enough data, I decided to track the spending of selected students for one month.

4
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

Students were given books containing printed tables. I asked the students to
document their spending in the tables. I checked in with the students once a week.
After one month, I collected the books from the students to calculate how much
they spent and where they spent the money. I was able to develop charts and
graphs to record their spending, documenting how their money spent. I also
calculated the percentages to demonstrate what percentages were spent towards
which category.

The chart below is a section of the chart that was printed and given to students for
collecting data. Students were given duplicates of the charts with multiple rows.
Date What buy How much money

When calculating the percentages (of money spent towards specific categories), I
divided the amount spent toward specific category divided by the total money
spent.

ANALYSIS OF DATA
The data shows that students spend most of their money on snacks from the tuck
shop on campus. Every month most students struggle to save money. From the
data I collected, it is show that it is due to the bad habit of spending money at the
tuck shop. It is important to budget money.
Overall, the students spent more on snacks than transportation than restaurant
food. The students spent on average of on snacks at the tuck shop the below shows
how I got these finding.

9
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

I notice they always spend on snacks so quick while parent given child money they
all spend on snacks daily although I knew students spent a lot of money at the tuck
shop, I was surprised to see how much more was spent at tuck shop in compared to
other items. I was also surprised to not see other categories (such as school
supplies) show up on the spending surveys.
