Act I
1.
Yes; I would like to know my own prophecy. It would be an experience that most people wouldn’t be able
to have and it would be cool to know what my future is like. If I did not like how my prophecy turned out,
then I would be able to change the actions I make that would lead up to what I did not like.

2.
(A). Shakespeare establishes a very dark and evil mood at the beginning of the play by using the thunder
sound and by starting off with the three witches speaking to each other. The three witches are talking
about a war which also adds to the dark and evil mood. “When the hurly-burly’s done, when the battle’s
lost and won.

(B). Shakespeare establishes a very dark atmosphere at the beginning of the play. Something fair could be
foul to someone while something foul could be fair to another person. The poetic device being used in this
quote is paradox.

3.
Four visual images in those lines are brandished steel, smoked with bloody execution, and carved out his
passage till he faced the slave. “Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody
execution, like Valor’s minion, carved out his passage till he faced the slave;(Act 2 Scene 2 Lines 19-22)”
These four visual images give us a better picture of what is going on.

4.
A). The sister’s prophecies for Macbeth were that he was going to become thane of cawdor and the king.
For Banquo they say that his son will become king as well.

B). His aside reveals about his thinking that the witches’ prophecy has to be true about him becoming
king.
5.
A). It is ironic that Macbeth walks in just as Duncan is talking about the old thane of cawdor because
Macbeth is the new thane of cawdor

B). Macbeth admits that he must prevent anyone from seeing his evil intentions. He also realizes that he
will have to kill Duncan and Malcolm in order to become king and fulfill the prophecy.

6.
A). Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a more dominant character who is willing to do whatever to
get things done.

B). Once Lady Macbeth has heard of the witches’ prophecy, it is apparent that Duncan’s life is doomed
because she will make sure that he dies one way or another to ensure that Macbeth gets the throne.

7.
A). At the end of Macbeth’s soliloquy, what decision does he make? Macbeth fears that he will die if he
kills the king which foreshadows his death. At the end of Macbeth’s soliloquy, he decides to go through
with killing Duncan.

B). Lady Macbeth and Macbeth eventually decide to go through with killing Duncan. Lady Macbeth has
no doubt that her plan will work and her motivation is for Macbeth to become king. Macbeth on the other
hand is afraid that their plan won’t work and isn’t really motivated by anything.

Act II

1.
Shakespeare might have made Duncan’s murder take place offstage so the audience would picture the
murder. He might have done this so he could create a more vivid picture of the murder using words. I do
not think it was to preserve the dignity of Duncan or shield the horror of the crime. Not being able to see
the murder makes it that much more dramatically effective.

2.
Banquo and Fleance use metaphors in their speech to say the it is very dark outside even though the moon
in out. It makes the mood seem very ominous and dark.
3.
Lady Macbeth decides not to kill Duncan herself because he looks like her father. This tells us that Lady
Macbeth has some sort of feelings toward someone and she isn’t completely cold hearted. In act 1, her
speeches are more cold with no feeling, while in act 2 she shows more emotion.

4.
A). Macbeth acts as if he was completely loyal to Duncan and that nothing even mattered now that he
died. He was overreacting to the situation.

B). The language in this section that shows this is there’s nothing serious is mortality, the wine of life is
drawn and the mere lees is left this vault to brag of.

5.
A). The old man fulfils the three roles by first saying that this horrible event has made all the horrors in
his life seem like a joke which represents the first role. Then he compares the death of the king to a falcon
being killed by an owl which represents the second role. The old man is just an ordinary person who
witnessed what happened which represents the third

B). Macduff’s character first suspects that the guards were paid off to kill Duncan by Malcolm and
Donalbain because they fled. He then says that he will not go to Macbeth’s crowning which might mean
that he suspects that Macbeth killed Duncan. It also means that Macduff is showing that he is grieving for
Duncan by not going. I think that Macduff is being diplomatic by not going to Macbeth’s crowning
because it shows respect toward Duncan.

6.
Donalbain and Malcolm should get as far away as possible from Macbeth. That is their best way
to insure their safety. If they stay and look for their father’s killer, they will likely be killed by Macbeth. It
would be better for them to stay together and get someone they trust to find information on their father’s
killer for them. Donalbain and Malcolm also need to trust each other completely. If they can’t trust each
other, it will most likely not end well for them. The best option is to get far away from Macbeth, find
information about Duncan’s murder, and expose the killer for who they are.
Act III
1.
A) Macbeth envies Duncan because he is dead. Macbeth says that Duncan is able to be in
peace and relax without anything being able to hurt him. Macbeth on the other hand, is
going crazy. He is constantly scared of what will happen to him and isn’t able to even
sleep well. This is ironic because he went through all the trouble of killing Duncan to
become king when it wasn’t even worth it.
B) It is impossible for Macbeth to forget the past because Banquo and Fleance are still alive.
This means that Banquo’s prophecy will one day come true. Macbeth hints that he will
send people to go and kill Banquo and Fleance at night.

2.
A) Macbeth creates the appearance of peace and harmony by acting like a gracious host and
mingling with with people at the party. This changes when the murderers get here because once
they tell Macbeth that Fleance got away, he starts to get scared again and starts to see the ghost of
Banquo which makes him look like a mad man to the guests.

B) The murderers are not successful in carrying out the instructions given to them by Macbeth. They
ended up killing Banquo by cutting his throat, but weren’t able to kill Fleance. They were also
very suspicious when walking into the party because one of the men did not wash the blood off of
his face.

3.
A) The ghost of Banquo does nothing but stare at Macbeth which enrages him and causes him to
shout at something that isn’t there. Lady Macbeth tells everyone that Macbeth is sick in the head
and isn’t feeling well. She then tells everyone to leave.

B) Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that he is determined to visit the witches. He wants to do this to
learn more about his prophecy. Macbeth is trying to protect himself and make sure that he is safe
by any means necessary. He has gone too far to back out.

4.
Hecate is upset with the witches because they gave a prophecy to Macbeth who is a person who does
whatever he wants without thinking about others. She was also mad because they did this without
consulting her and asking if she wanted to come to show off her powers. Hecate promises that she will
make something horrible for Macbeth that will trick him with illusions.

5.
Lennox’s speech shows us that he definitely knows that everything doesn’t add up. It shows us that he is
saying in a sarcastic manner that Donalbain, Malcolm, and Fleance killed their father. This means that he
believes that this did not actually happen. He also says that Macbeth is suspect for killing the two guards
before anyone could speak to them. From this speech we can conclude that Lennox knows that Macbeth
has been the culprit for everything that has happened to Duncan and Banquo.
