jnunez102306@laleadership.org  Dear Susan Goldberg,

I am a student at Los Angeles Leadership Academy, I am currently

enrolled in a biology class, which is led by my teacher; Tod Silverstein.
We have gone over lessons on how Global warming is taking its toll on
this place we call home. Earth. We have over our own carbon footprints
and been able to calculate. The earth has gone through many changes
over the years, but through the 2000s it has been increasing by a deadly
amount of carbon. The carbon dioxide has been affecting our world in
various ways such as the Carbon cycle, Slash and Burn farming, and the
Greenhouse effect. The carbon cycle is a process of carbon dioxide (CO2)
which is cycled through everything even people and plants. After every
breath, we release CO2 in which the trees and plants absorb the CO2
which then releases it into our atmosphere. The carbon cycle is also
responsible for the Greenhouse Gases, it’s a layer of gas which
surrounds the earth and provides warmth that comes from our sun’s rays
allowing it to enter our earth’s atmosphere and never go back into space,
if it weren’t for the gases being in their position we would be exposed to
harmful rays from the sun and the temperature would drop and we
would freeze to death. Our trees and plants absorb the CO2 that we
release and turns it into the oxygen, without trees a larger amount of
carbon would be released. This event is taking place in Haiti due to
poverty and lack of funds and no resources, the conditions are so bad the
Haitians cut down their own trees in order to provide for themselves.
These actions resulted in what was once a beautiful lushes island is now a
dry piece of land that has died out little by little, the Haitians are using an
agricultural method known as slash and burn farming, this type of
method releases even more CO2 into our atmosphere, without trees the
less CO2 there is. As i mentioned before, we have calculated our own
carbon footprint, I hypothesized that it would take 39 trees to offset my
carbon footprint. Susan Goldberg our home is at risk, as stated there is
alot of issues and reasons behind to why we are suffering from global
warming, global warming has affected the glaciers; causing them to melt
faster then usual. In Boyle Heights, the people within the community
have stated how the factories around the area, along with busy freeways
near by, has been a huge aspect to why there is so much pollution in the
area. The fossil fuel that are being spat out from the vehicles and
factories. As stated on a Netflix series; One Strange Rock; starring Will
Smith, We must balance out the earth from all pollution taking place.
Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,

Joseph Nunez
