Learning priority: Contributing her ideas with others and developing confidence.

In our childcare centre we encourage our children to keep our classrooms nice and clean and
tidy. They know that all the activities are for them, they are allowed to choose anything they
want and use those as long as they like but when they finished using those they have to tidy up
and put those back where it belongs.
Everyday after lunch the children have to tidy their lunch boxes and then help clean up the table
and floor. Farah, you are fascinated about sweeping the floor. Actually you are interested in
most of the domestic work. Not just show interest but you enjoy doing those house work and
practical life activities like an expert. You might have some practice at home too, Masha Allah.
The other day when you started to sweep the floor using the big broom, M. Ali came to help
you. You told M. Ali what to do, and asked him to get the dustpan and duster. It was amazing to
observe you two working and helping each other and co-operating.
You both worked together so wonderfully and for so long that when all the children went
outside you both were still cleaning. Masha Allah you have done a perfect job. I was so proud of
you Farah !

Working together gives children the opportunity to practice social skills like turn taking, problem
solving, co-operating, communicating with each other. Also children build good relationships and
increase their sense of responsibility. Through this activity Farah was developing all these skills.
She was also developing gross motor skills, social skills, hand-eye co-ordination, strengthening
her hand mussels, learning to keep the environment clean and tidy.
What’s next?
In sha Allah We will make sure that Farah gets plenty of opportunities to develop her skills
further. Perhaps she will help keep the outdoor environment clean and tidy too.
“Children will experience an environment in which opportunities to learn with and alone side
others are encouraged”, Te Whariki.
