Types of Blood Collecting Tubes :-

1. Purple Top Tube / Lavender Top Tube :-


 इस tube EDTA ( Ethylene diamine tetra Acetic Acid ) addictive होता जो एक
Anticogulant

Tube used for :-


 CBC ( Complete Blood Count )
 ESR ( Erythrocyte sedimentation Rate )
 HbA1C test
 Blood film for Abnormal cells or Malaria Parasites
 Reticulocytes
 PTH ( Parathyroid Hormone )
 Red cells Folate
 Monospot test for EBW

 Sample बाद कम कम 8 बार Invert ज र क ( Help in Mix in EDTA ).

2. Pink Top Tube :-


 Also contain EDTA, Tube Specifically used only for Whole blood samples being
sent to Transfusion Lab.

Tube used for :-

 Cross match

 Group & Save ( G&S )

 Direct Coomb's Test for Autoimmune hemolytic Anemia.

3. Yellow Top Tube :-
 This tube also known as the SST ( Serum separating tube ).

Contain :- It contains 2 Agents

 Silica Particles :- The Silica Particles work to activated clotting and cause the
Blood cells to clump together.

 Serum Separator :- इस inert polymer gel पायी जाती जो Blood cells एवं
Plasma को
अलग कर रखती ।
Tube Used For :- इस Tube का Use कई कार Serum Analaysis कर काम िजस
Endocrinology, Oncology, Toxicology, Mircobiology एवं
Immunology िलए कर ।

 Urea & Electrolytes :- Urea & Electrolytes ( Na, K, Ca & Iron ).

 C - Reactive Protein ( CRP )

 LFT ( Liver Function Test ) :- Bilirubin, AST/ALT , Albumin

 Bone Profile - Calcium, PO4, ALP


 Troponine
 Tumour Markers - PSA, CEA, CA-125, CA 19-9
 Toxicology - Ethanol, Cannabis, Opiates
 Drug Levels - PCM, Salicylate, Aspirin
 Immunology - Immunoglobulin Ig, Rheumatoid Factor

4. Blue Top Tube :-


 Contain :- Sodium citrate which acts as a Reversible Anticoagulant by Binding to
Calcium ions in the Blood and Disrupting the clotting cascade.

Test Used For :-

 Coagulation Screen
o B.T ( Bleeding Time ) for Platelets function
o P.T ( Prothrombin Time ) for Extrinsic Pathway
o APTT for Intrinsic Pathway
o Throbbing time or Fibrinogen assay for the final common
Pathway.

 D-dimer Test :- For Thrombosis

 INR for monitoring Patient on Warfarin.

 APTT Ratio :- For Monitoring patients on IV heparin infusion ( This is calculate


from APTT ).

5. Grey Top Tube :-


 Tube contain two agents

1. Sodium fluoride :- Sodium fluoride यह Antiglycolytic agents की तरह काम करता , जो


Sample बाद यह Glucose को टट रोकता ( यह Glucose को 5 दन तक Preserve
कर रख सकता ).

2. Potassium Oxalate :- यह Anticogulant की तरह काम करता

Tube Used For :-

 Glucose FBS

 GTT

 Lactate

6. Red Top Tube :-


 No Addictive Present

 Mode of Action - Blood Clots & Serum separate by Centrifugation

Tube Used For -

 Chemistry

 Immunology

 Serology

 Blood Bank ( Cross match )

7. Black Top Tube :-


 Used for - ESR ( Westergren ).

8. Dark Green Top Tube :-
 Contain :- Sodium heparin which acts as anticoagulants.

Tube Used For :-

 Ammonia

 Insulin

 Renin & Aldosterone

9. Light Green Top tube :-


 Plasma separating Tube

Contain :- Lithium Heparin

Used For :- Chemistry

10. Orange Top Tube :-


 Contains :- Thrombin based activator which allows stat serum testing.

11. White Top Tube :-


 Use for Molecular Diagnostics.

eg. PCR & DNA amplification.
