Problem 1. (25 pts) Conduct a Google search to find a company with an ISO 14000
certification.

• Give the URL (website) where it says it has the ISO 14000 certification.

• What is the product or the service of the company? How is the certification related to the
service/product?

Problem 2 :

We have P1 = almosphesic pressuse = 1.05 bar

P2 = 25 psig = 1.7 bar

Gauge Pressure = Absolute Pressure – Almosphesic Pressure

Absolute Pressure = 1.7 + 1.05 = 2.75 bar

Volumetric flowsate, Q = 1500 GPM = 0.0964 m3/s

𝜇 = 40 CP ; z2 = 150 ft = 45.72 m
Specific gravity = 0.87 ; 𝜌 = 870 kg/m3

n = 70%

Type = 10 in Sch 40 number (commercial steel pipe)

35 -> 90 elbows

10 -> gate valves ( fully open)

We use formula :
𝑊𝑋𝑚
(1) P =
𝑛

P -> power

W -> work done

n -> efficiency
∆𝑃 ∆𝑝𝑓
(2) + g∆𝑧 - –W=0
𝜌 𝜌

∆𝑃 = P2 – P1= 2.75 – 1.05 = 1.7 m

∆𝑍 = Z2 – Z1 = 45.72 – 0 = 45.72 m

𝑒 = 0.046 mm ( for commercial steel pipe)

ID ( inner diameter) for 10 inch ( 40 Sch) = 254.5 mm

Total equivalent length = 40*35 + 10*7.5 = 1475m

Total L ( with fittings) = 80470 + 1475 = 81945 m

Problem 3:

Pressure at point 1 = 5 atm or 506625 N/m2

Pressure at point 2 = 2.5 atm or 253312.5 N/m2

Length of pipe (L) = 10 mile 16093.4 m

Apply Bernoulli equation between point 1 and 2 as follows

P1/𝜌g + V1/2g + Z1 = P2/𝜌g + V22/2g + Z2 + Hf ( 1)

Where, P1 and P2 are pressures at point 1 and 2 respectively

V1 and V2 are flow velocities at point 1 and 2 respectively

Z1 and Z2 are elevation from datum

Hf is head loss due to friction = fLV2/2gD

Since, at point 1 there is no flow, hence V1 = 0

Let pipe center line be datum, than Z1 = Z2 = 0

Hence equation 1 reduces to,

P1/𝜌g = P2/𝜌g + V22/2g + fLV2/D(2g) ( 2)

To determine, friction factor, determine Reynold number ( Re),

Re = 𝛾 V D / 𝜇

Where, 𝜇 = dynamic viscosity of ethylene ( 0.001 cP or 10-5 Ns/m2)

Neglect velocity to determine approximate Reynold number,

Re = 1.24 * ( 6/12) /10-5 = 6.2 * 104

Roughness of Sch 40 steel ( e) = 0.045 mm

Therefore, relative roughness ( e/D) = 0.045/152.4 = 0.000295 ( 6 in = 152.4 mm)

From Moody diagram, for Re= 6.2 * 104 and relative roughness

( e/D)= 0.000295 , f= 0.016

Putting values in equation 2,

506625 253312.5 𝑉2 0.016∗16093.4∗𝑉 2
= + +
1.24∗9.81 1.24∗9.81 2∗9.81 0.152∗2∗9.81

41648.17 = 20824.08 + 0.051 V2 + 86.34 V2

=> 86.39 V2 = 20824.1

=> V = 15.525 m/s

Volumetric flow rate = A x V

= ( 𝜋/4) (0.152)2 *15.525

= 0.2815 m3/s
Mass flow rate = 1.24 x 0.2815 kg/s = 0.349 kg/s Or 0.024 slugs/s

Critical mass velocity is related with flow velocity as follows:

Vm = 𝛾 A V

Where, Vm = mass flow rate

𝛾 = density of fluid

A = cross sectional area of pipe

V = flow velocity

Problem 4:

P1=101.3 KN/m2 , P2=500 KN/m2 , T1=298 K , 𝛾= 1.4

If the process is Isentropic then

𝑃
T2 = T1(𝑃2 )( 1 – (1/𝛾 ))
1

Putting all the values in above equation, we get

500
T2 = 298 (101.3)(1–(1/1.4)) = 473.58K

From ideal gas law: V1= ( nRT1)/P1 =( 1*8.314* 298)/ (101300) = 0.024 m3 = 24 L

Using formula in case of Isentropic condition for finding final volume as :

V2 = V1( P1/P2)1/𝛾 = 24( 101.3/500)1/1.4= 7.7 L

So, work done is calculate as: w= (500 -101.3) KNm-2 * 1 m3s-1= 398.7 KW

In case of Isothermal process work done is:

𝑉
W = ∫𝑉 2 ( 𝑅𝑇/ V) dV
1

= RT [ln( 7.7) − ln( 24)] = 8.314 * 298 * ( -1.13) = - 2.86 KJ

In Isothermal the work is done by the system and in case of the isentropic condition work is
done on the system happened
