Lesson Plan Template:

Grade: 1/2
Subject: Science
Unit: The Senses
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
MO (2013) - Cross-curricular outcomes:
a) Know how to learn: to gain knowledge, understanding or skills through experience, study,
and interaction with others
d) Manage information: access, interpret, evaluate and use information effectively, efficiently,
and ethically
e) Innovate: create, generate and apply new ideas or concepts
h) Demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others
OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES
General Learning Outcomes:
 1–9 Use the senses to make general and specific observations, and communicate
observations orally and by producing captioned pictures.
 1–10 Describe the role of the human senses and the senses of other living things, in
enabling perception and action.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

 1. Identify each of the senses, and explain how we use our senses in interpreting the
world.
 3. Apply particular senses to identify and describe objects or materials provided and
to describe living things and environments. Students meeting this expectation will be
able to describe characteristics, such as colour, shape, size, texture, smell and
sound.

OUTCOMES stated in learner friendly language

Students will:
● Students will be able to identify the five senses
● Students will be able to apply their knowledge of the five senses to a snow globe
scenario
● Students will be able to describe the five senses
ASSESSMENTS
Formative: Summative (if applicable):
 Fist to Five  Not applicable for this lesson
 Observation:
-Watch to ensure that students are on
task
-Check for student engagement
-Move around the room and check in
with tables
-Clarify any questions
-Observe their ability to apply their
learning to the worksheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction (time: )

Hook/Attention Grabber:
 Cue PowerPoint presentation and YouTube Video
 Introduce the topic for the lesson- Stuck in a Snow Globe (The Five Sense)
 Reflect and review the snow globes that the class created during their
previous art lesson
 Have the students share with their table groups some of the elements they
included in their snow globes
 Have a few students share their responses with the class
 Remind the students that I only pick quiet hands, and look for students who
are sitting quietly and using their attentive listening ears.
 This hook activity will get students thinking about their prior knowledge of
snow globes reviewed in the previous class

Assessment of Prior Knowledge:

 This lesson assesses the student’s prior knowledge from their previous art class in
which they created their own personal snow globe. The first class allowed the
students to envision and create a snow globe, while this lesson will require them to
think about the intricacies of the snow globe in regards to the five senses science
unit.

Expectations for Learning and Behavior:

- Be respectful of yourself and others
- Be considerate
- Active Participation
- Attentive Listening
- Raising hands to answer questions

Differentiation:
 Visual learning needs addressed through PowerPoint images and video
 Auditory learning needs addressed through class and group discussion, as well as
the video

Transition to Body:
 Hand out Stuck in a Snow Globe worksheets to students

Body (time: )

Learning Activity #1: The Five Senses Video

 Tell students that today we are going to be learning about the five different senses
we have (Seeing, Hearing, Tasting, Touching, Smelling, Feeling)
 Play introductory video for students on the five senses
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1xNuU7gaAQ 0:00- 3:06
 After the video has concluded, use the PowerPoint slides to review the five senses
the students learned about in the video

Learning Activity #2: Five Senses/ Snow Globe PowerPoint

 Following the video, review the five senses with the students.
 Review the Hear, Smell, Taste, Feel, See, PowerPoint slides with the students
 Hear- We ear with our ears
 Smell- We smell with our nose
 Taste- We taste with our mouth
 Feel- We feel with our hands and skin
 See- We see with our eyes
 Snow Globe Slides- Review the different aspects in the snow globes. What do the
students see in them
 Now ask the students the following question, “I want you to imagine what it would be
like to be stuck inside a snow globe”
 “What would it feel like? What would it smell like? What would it taste like? What
would you see? What would you hear?”
 What do you hear? – PowerPoint Slide
 Ask the students what they would hear if they were stuck in a snow globe
 Ask the students to discuss this with their table groups
 Have a few students share their answer with the class
 Go to the next slide to review the answers that I came up with
 What do you feel? – PowerPoint Slide

 Go to the next slide to review the answers that I came up with
 Formative Assessment- Fist to Five- Rate your understanding of the five sense on
a scale from one to five, with five being you completely understand the five senses.

Learning Activity #3: Work Sheet Activity

 As a class, have the students go through and fill out their Stuck Inside a Snow Globe
Worksheets
 Go through and individually analyze and talk about the expectations for each section
 Ask the class to provide some examples of words that could be used
 Encourage students who are finished early to include additional words they think of
 Remind the students that I only pick quiet hands, and look for students who are
sitting quietly and using their attentive listening ears.
 Formative Assessment: Ask the students for a thumbs up after they finish each
page.
Closure (time: )

Feedback From Students:

 Have the students turn to their elbow partners and share and explain one of the five
senses they learned about in today’s class.
