PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte declared June 5 a regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr.

Duterte, through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, signed Proclamation 729 on

Tuesday, May 28th, a copy of which was given to members of the media a day after.

“The entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and
sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr,” the
proclamation read.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of
national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Wednesday, 05 June 2019, a regular holiday
throughout the country,” it added.

Eid’l Fitr marks the end of the Feast of Ramadan where Muslims go on a 30-day fast. It is a
major festival of Islam, aside from Eid’l Adha, which commemorates the willingness of
Ibrahim to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son.
