GRADE LEVEL PASSAGE RATING SHEET

Prompt: Have you ever seen a greenhouse? How do gases affect the
temperature? Read and find out.

The Greenhouse Effect

For 10,000 years, the Earth’s surface temperature remained

steady at 14C with 3% carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the atmosphere. This

produced greenhouse gas and water vapor. Today, greenhouse gases

trap heat, keeping Earth warm with water vapor, CO 2 , methane and

chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

People contribute to make temperature warm. Their increased

electric consumption has resulted to 25% CO 2 in atmosphere; allowing

more water vapor that multiplies the increase in temperature.

Scientists think that the Earth would grow warmer by 4-9% by

2050, resulting to drought that might wipe out some animal species.
