CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

K-12 curriculum was implemented last 2012 by the Department of Education, under the

administration of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. This entails the institutionalization of

Kindergarten and the addition of two more years of high school in the basic education cycle, which

are Grade 11 and Grade 12, consisting of three tracks, Academic (GAS, HUMSS, STEM, ABM),

Technical-Vocational (HE, IA, ICT), and Sports and Design.

The K-12 basic education program is the flagship program of the Department

Education in its desire to offer a curriculum which is attuned to 21st century. The department seeks

to create a basic education sector that is capable of attaining the country’s education for all

objectives and millennium development goals (Hawsnetph,2016). According to President Aquino

(2012), Philippines need to add two years on the basic education where the students will have to

undergo a new system of basic education. Enable to prepare the students to be globally

competitive. This system aims to fully enhance and develop the students in order for them to be

well-prepared to join the work force right after high school and suitably prepared for a higher level

of education (Theasianph,2015).
The K-12 curriculum was designed to provide a holistic education for all. Therefore

Grade 11 Senior High school of Colegio de Kidapawan consider the K-12 satisfying because it

mold their knowledge and skills for the career path they will take for their future. Wherein this

system seek to enhance the capability of every Filipino student, to uplift the quality of education

in the Philippines in order to meet the standards required for professionals who would want to

work abroad.

Statement of the Problem

This study will formulate a theory about the satisfaction of K-12 curriculum to the Grade

11 Senior High School students at Colegio de Kidapawan and seek to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the rate of satisfaction of K-12 curriculum to the students?

Objective of the study

The researchers aim to know the percentage on satisfaction of K-12 curriculum to the

Grade 11 Senior High School at Colegio de Kidapawan.

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is to let the students know the percentage of satisfaction on

the K-12 curriculum on enhancing their knowledge and skills for their future careers.

2
Scope and Delimitation

The study focused and limited only on the Grade 11 Senior High School students at

Colegio de Kidapawan, about the rate of the students who are satisfied to the K-12 curriculum. The

satisfaction on K-12 curriculumwhere categorized based on the given survey questionnaires.

The research instrument were only administered among the selected Grade 11 Senior High School

students from the five strands under the Academic and Technical Vocational track at Colegio de

Kidapawan.

International Community. However, our current education system hinders us from

becoming more competitive where the education system of the Philippines was enhanced from ten

years of basic education to a 12-year program called K-12 (Hub Pages Inc., 2016). The K-12

programs accelerates mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in other countries

(K-12 Philippines, 2015).

The choice of career starts initially from primary to secondary school, and even in Senior

High Levels, where choice of strand will be undertaken whether Science Technology, Business

or Humanities. This is the crucial time to understand what career means and how it will affect your

life forever (Olatunde, A.T., 2015).

Education is necessary for the practice of chosen careers. And experience is one of the

major tool to enhance the skills and knowledge of the student for their future ( Tabora, 2015).

he K-12 Basic Education Program aims to provide every Filipino child with the education s/he

needs to compete in a global context. In May, President Benigno Aquino of the Philippines signed

into law a basic education curriculum that will see a mandatory kindergarten year and two

additional senior high school years added to what was a 10-year education curriculum to make

basic education 12 years. The programme has been adopted not only in schools in the Philippines,

but also in Filipino schools abroad that follow the department’s curriculum ( ICEF, 2013).
Senior High School is two-year of specialized upper secondary education; students may

choose a specialization based on aptitude, interest and school capacity. The choice of career

track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in Grade 11 and 12. Each student in

Senior High School can choose among three tracks Academic, Technical-Vocational Livelihood,

Sports and Arts, The Academic include HUMSS(Humanities And Social Sciences), STEM

(Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics), ABM(Accountancy and Business

Management) (Gazette,2012).

The new education system designed to let the students understand the purpose of highly

standardized learning, wherein they undergo on a more advance education, focuses on using

technology, and how to communicate with other people ( Nation Research Council, 2012). The

decision on good career choice sometimes depend on how the way students perceived the world

and their future. In coming up with the right decision of what profession to take, students need to

utilize their skills (Pafili and Mylonakis,2011).

The new system were appropriate because they would entail creating new institutions to

expand the range of education services provided. Moreover, the new education system will

produced a motivated institution with a more improve performance ( Brewer, et al., 2007)

“What you are in the present reflects what you will be in the future”. The path that will be

taken today, especially in choosing the specified track is a big step in shaping the children’s future.

Hence, the k-12 curriculum is an advance education system for shaping globally competitive

learners, as well as meeting the satisfaction and expectation of the students in terms of teaching

techniques. It is because of the different methods and strategies of the way that are taught.
