B. Research task: Mexican Independence Day

The Mexican Tourist Board has

commissioned you as a copywriter to
produce a leaflet about Mexican
Independence Day which will attract
English tourists to the country.

You will need to research this national day

and then produce an attractive leaflet
which explains the event clearly. It must be written in your own words (copyright
restrictions on publications do not allow you to copy and paste from the internet)!

Answering the research questions below will help you to write clearly for your target
audience. Tick off each question as you include it in your leaflet, adding relevant images.

Research questions Tick here

When is Mexico’s Independence Day celebrated (the events run over two
days)?

How did Mexico first gain independence and from whom? How long did this
struggle take?

Who was Father Hidalgo and what was his role in winning independence?

What sort of events take place to mark the occasion on each of the days?

What are the slogans or ‘Grito de Delores’ and what is their origin?

What do the colours of the Mexican flag represent?

What makes this event interesting for visiting tourists?

Is there anything else you would want to know if you were going to visit?

Mini-plenary

Having completed the listening activity you could use the interactive Choptalk activity as a
mini-plenary. Launch this in the same way as the starter interactive above. This Choptalk
task is an extract from the start of the listening transcript which students can drag into the
correct order. If additional support is needed with this, the relevant section of the audio
recording could be played again at this point.

Choptalk answer:

Transcript

Fuimos a Varadero y La

cerrado y no pudimos entrar.
