RATIONALE
The proper control, collection, and disposal of solid wastes is mandated in the country’s
Republic Act 9003. Under this law, Holy Name University instills a culture of responsible waste
management among students through the implementation of a number of policies, one of
them being the segregation of trashes. Despite these policies, students, staff, and the
administration of the school still do not take action to make the department’s waste
management effective. There is no true, properly promulgated, and strictly implemented
practice of waste management in the Junior High School. Among the factors that cause such is
the implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of the school’s policies. Staff and students are
not given much orientation on how to proceed with the school’s system for waste
management. There are existing policies that are beyond the awareness of most of the
population. The school lacks regular monitoring over the segregation of trashes and the
practices of the students and staff that is needed to make its waste management effective.
Neither have there been any improvements made to correct the malpractices. A key factor of
this is also the values and the attitude of the people themselves. Some Junior High School
students disregard and are either lazy or indifferent to the school’s waste management
program. If such malpractices continue, it may result to sanitary and health problems like
dengue fever and cold viruses.

The main reason as to why we chose to conduct this research is to assess the capacity of
the Junior High School of Holy Name University in managing solid waste in the campus and to
identify the factors that affect the practice of the Junior High School on solid waste
management.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The primary objective of this study is to identify the factors that affect the practice of Junior
High School students on solid waste management. It focuses on the awareness, practices, and
the existing system of the school on its solid waste management. The scope will cover selected
participants from all grade levels of the Junior High School and will be conducted in the Junior
High School Department of Holy Name University.
