A. GENERAL
Structure of silo leg is used to support the silo, in empty condition and with full content of cement material. This silo, named silo 2
is additional batching plant silo of Ferronickel Smelting Plant, constructed by Bumi Mineral Sulawesi. The main column of this leg
support use Steel Pipe Schedule 40 dia 8", with equal angle 75 x 8 as bracing element.

C.2. BRACE ELEMENT

C.2.1 Material Properties
Equal angle, with length, b = 110 mm
Thickness, t = 8 mm
Elasticity = 200000 MPa
Yield strength, Fy = 240 MPa
Bracing length, L = 3654.9 mm
Gross area, A = 1696 mm2
Inertia, I = 1992938.9 mm4

C.2.2 Section Slenderness

b/t = 13.750
0.91√E/Fy = 26.269

Acccording to the condition above, where b/t < 0.91√E/Fy

13.750 < 26.269
So, the section is " Non-Slender Element "

C.2.3 Compressive Strength

Calculation of Nominal Compressive Strength (Pn) equal angle based on the limit states of flexural buckling in accordance
with section E3
Pn = Fcr x Ag x ⱷr

- Radius of gyration, r
Inertia, I = 1992938.9 mm4
Gross area, Ag = 1696 mm2
Radius of gyration, r = √I/A
= 34 mm
- Check KL/r
Lr/x > 80

base on the condition above, KL/r calculated:
KL/r = 32 + 1.25 (L/rx) ≤ 200
KL/r = 165.28
- Check 4.71√E/Fy
4.71√E/Fy = 135.97
KL/r > 4.71√E/Fy
165.28 > 135.97
- Calculate elastic buckling stress (Euler), Fe
2 2
Fe = Phi x E / (KL/r)
= 72.19 MPa
- Critical stress, Fcr = 0.877 x Fe

D. DESIGN OF CONNECTION
D.1 Material Properties
Equal angle, with length, b = 75 mm
Gusset plate thickness, tp = 8 mm
Elasticity, E = 200000 MPa
Yield stregth, Fy = 240 MPa
Ultimate strength, Fu = 400 MPa
Bracing length, L = 3654.9 mm
Gross area, Ag = 1280 mm2
Inertia Ix, Iy = 589000 mm4
Cx, Cy = 21.3 mm
Bolt diameter, Db = 20 mm

minimum plate condition:

Fu
tp ≤ t
Fyp

400
8 ≤ 8.2 (mm)
240

8 ≤ 13.7 (mm)

A min = 0.85 * Ag
= 1088 mm2

D.2 Plate Strength (Tension and Shear Combination)

Gusset plate and brace element have the same failure type. So, the calculation of plate strength based on brace element
(equal angle profile) as critical condition, because the area of gusset plate is larger than the equal angle
Rn = 1.2 lc x t x Fu ≤ 2.4 x d x t x Fu

160

bolt diameter = 20 mm
hole diameter = 22 mm
3

imaginary diameter = 24 mm

D22 40 75 40

Rn1 = 119040 ≤ 184320 = 119040

Rn2 = 230400 ≤ 184320 = 184320
Rn = 303360 N

D.3 Shear Strength of Bolts

In this case, bolts are subjected to shear meanwhile the connecting plates are subjected to bearing stresses
Shear strength, Rn = Fnv x Ab
= 143498 N

the connection use = 2 bolts

Rn = 286996 N

D.4 Block Shear Strength

Rn = 0.6 x Fu x Anv + Ubs x Fu x Ant ≤ 0.6 x Fy x Agv + Ubs x Fu x Ant
Fracture condition Yield condition

Anv = 360 mm2

Ant = 220 mm2
Fracture condition = 174400 N
Yield condition = 348928 N

So that, fracture condition value is used

Rn = 174400 N

D.5 Connection Design Check

From 3 failure condition above (plate strength, shear strength of bolts, and block strength), the smallest Rn value is used

Pn = ⱷ x Rn
= 0.5 x Rn
= 87200 N

P ultimate of brace element from SAP 2000 analysis:

Pu = 15292 N
