DC Power Supply:
We were shown a dc power supply looking like this.
This Power Button is used to turn the power supply On/Off. These dials
are used to set current and voltage( The fine dial is used to change the
current/voltage value with very small fraction while the coarse dial is used
change the current/voltage value with relatively larger fraction). This screen
gives the Current in Amperes while This screen gives the Voltage in Volt.

We connected a Black wire here and a Red wire here with crocodile clips at
one of the ends. First of all , The Current and Voltage were set to zero with
rotating the current dials and these voltage dials anticlockwise until stuck.
To set the current, Power Button was pressed to turn on the power, The
Voltage dials were set to maximum by rotating clock wise fully. The power
was then turned off and the crocodile clips were connected (Don’t connect

the terminals while the power is on because sparking will take place). The
power is turned on again and the current value that required is set using
the current dials. The terminals are then disconnected and Voltage value is
set as required using the voltage dials. The values of current and voltage
are now set and a circuit or load can be connected between the wires to
supply it the set current and voltage.

Components Issued

We were issued a box similar to this containing the following items:

1. Tweezers

Colour Coding
We used this chart to decode 4 different colour coded fixed resistors.

We used a magnifying glass with light to clearly see the colour coding on
the resistors

ECNA Lab Report

Resistance of the resistors was found to be:

1. 470 Ω1 ± 10%
2. 220 Ω ± 10%
3. 10k Ω ± 5 %
4. 330 Ω ± 10%

Experiment # 1
We took the 220 Ω resistor to use it in a circuit. The voltage to be supplied
was 10 V2. We found the current using the formula
𝑉
𝐼=
𝑅
The value of the current was found to be 45 mA3.

The dc power supply was set with the values of current and voltage and the
circuit was made as shown in the circuit diagram.

The voltage across the resistor was measured with a Digital Multimeter By
connecting the multimeter in parallel with resistor and setting it to measure

voltage. The voltage across resistor was found to be 9.92 V.

Digital Multi Meter (DMM)

Experiment # 2

We measured the resistances of 3 resistors using DMM and burned them

to different extent using high voltage and high current then measured their
resistances using DMM again:

Resistance before burning Resistance after burning

529 Ω infinity
362 Ω 322 Ω
222 Ω 278 Ω

Variable Resistors
Potentiometer:
Three terminal device used as variable resistor to
control voltage. We were taught how to use it.The total resistance of
potentiometer was found to be 1057 Ω using .We then connected the
dc power supply to the end terminals of the variable resistor and took
the output from the middle and one of the end terminals. We used it as
a potentiometer by rotating the dial thus changing the resistance and
hence changing the output voltage.

Rheostat:
Two or three terminal device used as variable resistor to
control current. We were not shown rheostat in the Lab.
