Focal Length

Student Objective
The student:
• Know the function of the Focal Length and focal distance in camera
Materials:
• Camera, Tripod, Artificial light ect.

Procedure:

1. Select a subject to capture your image ( person, surroundings, ect.)


2. Stand about 10 feet away from the subject.
3. Adjust your lens focal length every time you capture an image.
4. Once you are done on #3, take/capture an image by moving one (1) feet towards your
subject every time you take a shot.

Question guide:
1. Describe the image you see/capture.
2. Is the distance between the camera film/sensor and lens different from the focal length you measured
earlier? If so, why do you think this is?
3. When you bring the lens closer to the subject, do you need to change the distance between the lens and the
camera sensor/film? If so, do you need to increase or decrease the distance?

Final Synopsis
The focal length tells us the angle of view—how much of the
scene will be captured how large individual elements will be. The
longer the focal length, the narrower the angle of view. The shorter
the focal length, the wider the angle of view. And when I get closer
to the object I don’t have to change the camera sensor or lens
because it already focused and also there’s no need to increase or
decrease my distance.
But it depends upon the person if he intend to get a wider view
this is the time he decrease distance from his intend view and the
subject. And if he wants to focus on subject this is the time he
increase his distance just to capture his focus subject.
