Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

What I Need to Know
Motion and energy are important parts of our daily life. For example,
watching movie in theater allows you to witness how motion and energy work
together. Movies or motion picture captures actual scenes using a video
camera.
How do different forms of energy interact with the objects around us?
Energy is required to work. It is how things change and move. It is everywhere
around us and takes all sorts of forms. It takes energy to cook food, to drive to
school and to jump in the air.
In this unit, you will learn more about the motion of an object by
tracing and measuring its change in position (distance travelled) over a
period of time
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
• Describe the motion of an object by tracing and measuring its
change in position (distance traveled) over a period of time.
• Use the appropriate measuring tools and correct standard units
to measure distance.
• Measure the movement of an object using the right tools.

What’s New
Who is not in motion? It seems that everything is moving. From the time we wake up
until we go to sleep, all our activities involve movement. We need to move in order to complete
our tasks. Life without motion would surely be dull and boring. Motion will always be a part
of our daily lives for it is motion that makes us fully alive as human.

What Is It
Motion may be defined as movement of an object brought about by force. When there
is movement, there is motion. There can be no motion without force or set of forces. Forces,
therefore, initiate and influence motion.
Motion is relative. Consider the passengers in a moving car. The passengers inside
the car do not consider themselves moving because they are just sitting in the car. However,
the people standing outside consider them moving because the car is changing its position
from one point to another point. Motion is change in position with respect to a reference point.
A reference point is a fixed place or object used to determine the position of an object. If the
reference point is the ground outside the car, the passengers are moving. If the reference
point is the floor of the car, the passengers are not moving.
Distance is the measure of how far or near two points are from one another. Measuring
distance helps in determining the effect of motion on the length covered by an object from one
point to another point. Measuring distance using time, landmark or body parts is not reliable.
It is inaccurate.
Time measured the period during which an action, process or condition exists or
continues.
The metric system is the world standard for measurement. It is used by scientist
throughout the world. Most countries use it, too.
Having a standard unit of measure makes it easier for scientist and other people to
understand data. Using different units of measurement may lead to misunderstanding and
confusion among people.
In the metric system, the standard unit of measurement used for distance or length is
meter. We just add the prefix kilo when the distance is quite far and prefixes like deci, centi,
and mili if the length is quite short.

To convert a larger metric unit to smaller metric unit, follow these steps:
1. Put 1 on the given unit. (Example: convert 1 kilometer to meter)
2. Then, add zero on the boxes and when your goal is reached, put a decimal point.
Remember:
By conversion, we can get the following value used in the metric system of
measurement:

1 km = 1000 m
1 m = 100 cm
1 m = 1000 mm
Distance is how far one thing from one thing. It can be calculated by multiplying
speed by time
Formula:
Distance = speed x time

For example, A bus travelling at an average rate of 50 kilometers per hour made
the trip to town in 6 hours. How far does a bus travel?
Time can be calculated, by dividing the distance travelled by an object to its speed.
Seconds (s), minutes (min)and hours (hr) are examples the standard units of
measurement for time .
Formula:

For example, If Antonio drives his car 45 km per hour and travels a total of 225km.
Calculate the travelled time spent by Antonio ?
225 km
Time = = 5 hrs

Speed can be calculated by dividing the distance covered by an object in motion by
the time spent to cover the distance.Meter per second,(m/s) kilometer per hours(kph)
are examples of units used in to express the speed of an object

For example: John drove to her sister’s house that is 20 meters away from
the market in 10 minutes. What is the speed of the John’s car?
Speed = 20 m 1 min = 20 m
