I. (a) Distinguish between single super phosphate and triple super phosphate. How is the latter
superior? Which are the raw materials used for the manufacture of these?

Why can't water be used for the absorption of sulphur trioxide? Which is the most
efficient agent for the absorption? Why?

What is pulping? Which is the most widely used pulping process? What is the cooking
solution used in this process?

Write down the chemical structure of neoprene rubber. List the curing agents for
neoprene. What are the special properties of neoprene?

What are unit operations? Distinguish between upstream and downstream unit operations
involved in bioprocesses, giving examples.

Draw a typical Michaelis-Menten plot and explain the first order and zero order regions.
Explain the factors to be considered in fixing the production capacity of a plant with
emphasis on break -even point.

Compare the salient features of the different types of cells used for the manufacture of
caustic soda. Describe the cell which is mostly used today.

HI. Why is ammonia synthesis carried out at high pressure and high temperature? Describe
the manufacture of ammonia with the help of a block diagram.

What are the effects of hydrogenation of oils? Describe a typical hydrogenation process.

Which is the most widely used synthetic rubber? Describe briefly the manufacture of the
rubber and how it compares with natural rubber in its properties.

Explain the importance of controlling the physical, chemical and biological parameters in
the operation of a bioreactor giving examples for each.

Describe with the help of a neat sketch the working of a stirred tank aeration bioreactor.
When do we use the following types of reactors? (i) Bubble column (ii) Packed bed

What is process design? Describe briefly the various steps involved in process design.
