Gone with the Wild

In most films, characters tend to play a key role in the development of the storyline due to

their contribution. Actors within a film can contribute in terms of physical action or

characterization. “Gone with the Wild” is an epic civil war drama which was acted in 1939

(Fleming et al., n.d.). The film was focused on the life of an actress, belle Scarlett O’Hara who is

described to have a child’s heart. The film is based on the survival of Scarlett through a tragic

history of the South. The period during which the film was acted was characterized by civil war

and reconstruction. This process made it difficult for the characters within the movie to have a

stable lifestyle. Scarlett is forced to engage in activities such as love affairs with different

characters to survive the civil war which occurred during this period.

Scarlett’s contribution to this film can be argued to be characterization. She is used as an

actress who portrays different characteristics within the film, most of which tends to make it

more interesting and engaging. The audience is forced to sympathize with Scarlett due to the

difficult experiences she underwent during the film. One of the attributes of this character was

that she had a child’s heart (Fleming et al., n.d.). At the beginning of the film, its clear that she is

worried by the occurrence of war due to the effects that it had on all people. One of the unique

characteristics of Scarlett was that she resented sickness. According to her, sickness made it

difficult for an individual to have fun.

Scarlett’s contributes to the film through characterization in that desires to be the center

of attention. Her nature caused her to steal from other people without caring about the

consequences of her actions. As a result, Scarlett ends up disrespecting various characters within

the film such as her sisters. Her desire to fall in love causes her to steal another woman’s lover

(Fleming et al., n.d.). The desire of being the center of attention makes life difficult for Scarlett

due to the actions that she is involved in. She is forced to trade with the Yankees whom she

despised to guarantee the success of her business. These are some of the actions which prove that

Scarlett is characterized by the attribute of being the center of attention.

Scarlett’s art is interesting due to various reasons. Her ability to live a life which was full

of desire during a period of civil war proves that she was a strong character. Her actions tend to

confuse the audience in that some of them are positive while others are negative. Scarlett’s

determination to trade with her enemies for the success of her business proves that she was a

focused character (Fleming et al., n.d.). However, her disrespect towards other people especially

her sisters and her lover’s partner prove that she was evil-minded. Lack of consideration of other

people’s feelings makes it difficult for the audience to sympathize with her in some instances

within the film.

Characterization is an important aspect of consideration within a film. Characters are

capable of expanding the storyline of a film due to the application of this factor. In this film,

Scarlett applies the aspect of characterization to portray different attributes such as

determination, greed, and naivety. Most of these attributes enable her to contribute effectively to

the development of the film.
