Tutorial -2 (Time Domain Analysis)

1. Determine the inductor current in the circuit of following Figure just before the switch is
opened. Given the values of the circuit elements are R1 = 1 k ohm; R2 = 5 k ohmR3 =
3.33 k ohm; L = 0.1 H; V1 = 12 V; V2 = 4 V. [Answer: iL=1.758mA]

2. A capacitor is used to store energy in a camera flash light. The camera operates on a 6V
battery. Determine the time required for the energy stored to reach 90% of the
maximum. Compute this time in seconds and as a multiple of the time constant. The
equivalent circuit is shown in following figure. (VB=6V, C=1000 µF, R=1k ohms)

[Answer: 2.97s, 3 time constants approx.]

3. The circuit shown in Following figure is at steady state before the switch closes at time t
= 0. Determine the capacitor voltage v(t) for t>0.

[Answer: v(t) = -6+18exp(-6.67t)]

4. Find current i(t) in the circuit shown in following figure assuming that the circuit reached
the steady state at time t=0-.

[Answer: i(t) = e-9t (cos4.359t+0.6882sin4.359t) A]

5. Determine the motor voltage for all the time in the simplified electric motor circuit
model shown in following figure. The motor is represented by series RL circuit in the
shaded box. Given RB= 2 ohm; RS= 20 ohm; Rm= 0.8 ohm; L = 3 H; VB = 100 V.

[Answer: vm(t) = -694.1e-t/0.1442 V]
