Theory II
Exercise 5 Three-Moment Equation
Instructions
1. Use A4 or yellow papers in accomplishing this exercise.
2. Write your full name and section in the first page and surname in the remaining pages.
3. Read, understand and present accurate solutions to the enumerated problems.
4. Do not round off intermediate values. But if you’re lazy to not round off, I allow 5 significant figures for the
intermediate values. Round off final answers to 3 significant figures and append appropriate units.
5. Arrange answer sheets in order and write page number in each sheet before passing them to the faculty-in-
charge. Page numbers should be written in the upper right corner of the answer sheets.
6. Do not cheat. Anyone caught cheating will be dropped from the course, be given a grade of 5 and be
reported to the student disciplinary tribunal.

Problem 1
Using three-moment equation, determine the support reactions of the beams in Figures 1, 2 and 3; then draw their
shear and bending moment diagrams. Use and and consider the following modifications in the given
FBDs.
· In Figure 1, support C is changed to a spring with spring constant of 200 k/in.
· In Figure 2, support B settles by 0.5 in.
• In Figure 3, point B is located in the middle of AC. Use , .
