1. The velocity field of a flow in (r, cp, z) cylindrical polar co-ordinates is given
by
3U a3 rz U a3 (r 2 - 2z2) ,
Vr = -2 (r2 + z2)5/2' Vz = -2 (r2 + z2)5/2 'v'P = 0.
Find the corresponding Stokes stream function.

2. A distribution of sources each of strength mdx is considered from origin

0(0, 0, 0) to a point A(~, 0, 0). Find the resultant velocity potential.

3. Consider the rigid rotation of a square with corners (1, 1, 0), ( -1, 1, 0),
(-1, -1,0) and (1, -1,0). If the corresponding vortex flow has the velocity
0),
v = (- xl;y 2 , x2x;Y 2 , where L is a constant, find the circulation around the
contour of the square.

4. Consider the following governing equations corresponding to a two-dimensional

viscous incompressible flow

--
{}p + {t ( \7 2 v - Vr)
ar r
-
r2 '
1 {}p 2 8vr
0 ---+t-t--
r ae r 2 {}()
If the radial velocity is given by Vr = ~~f(8) for an arbitrary function f that
depends only on (), obtain the equation satisfied by f.

5. A point source of strength m is located at (2, 1, 3). A wall at x = 0 is

introduced first and then another wall at y = 0. What is the velocity potential
of the corresponding flow?.

6. A sphere of radius a is placed in an otherwise undisturbed flow whose

velocity potential is given by ¢>0(r, e) = ~r cos()+ 2r 2 - 6r 2 cos2 e. Find the
disturbance caused due to the presence of the sphere subject to Neumann con-
dition on the surface of the sphere.

7. Consider an axi-symmetric flow whose velocity potential at far-field is given
by ¢(r, 8) = Ur cos e. What will be the corresponding stream function 1/J(r, 8)?.
State D'alembert's paradox and establish the same.

8. A viscous incompressible fluid occupies the region between two parallel

plates located at z = 0 and z = H. Given that the flow is unidirectional
v = (u(z,t),O,O), write down the Navier-Stokes equations corresponding to
this situation. While both the plates are impermeable, if the bottom plate
suddenly moves with a speed U and if the initial velocity is zero, formulate
the corresponding boundary value problem. Obtain the general solution using
separation of variables.

9. Let a plate start at x = 0, extend parallel to the x-axis and be of semi-

infinite length. Consider a steady flow parallel to the x-axis with far stream
velocity U00 • Write down the corre-Sponding boundary layer equations together
with the relevant boundary conditions.

10. The following equation

Dv * J.L
p - = -V'p+p V' 2 v- -v
Dt k
together with the equation of continuity can be used to describe the flow inside
a porous medium. (a). Introduce non-dimensional quantities and then obtain
the corresponding non-dimensional equation. Define the non-dimensional pa-
rameters that appear in the non-dimensional equation.
(b). Consider a porous cylinder in which the flow that is governed by the
above equation has the velocity v = (0, 0, w(r, z)) driven by a constant pres-
sure gradient. Write down the corresponding simplified equation for this flow
configuration. Solve the equation assuming that there are no singularities in-
side the cylinder and that the boundary of the cylinder r = a is impermeable.
