Chapter I

Background of the Study

Introduction

Modern days heroes, this is how the researcher called the Overseas Filipino Workers

(OFW) for many reasons. Parents play a major role in the behavior and performance of their

children because they are supposed to be the first teacher at home that will build the child’s

knowledge and foundation. Parents involvement in a child education is consistently found to be

positively associated with child’s behavior and performance. In addition, it is the parent

responsibility to take care of their children because students still need someone to teach them and

it is the beat to learn from the parents. Most of the time, children of OFWs are left with their

caregivers, which often times are family members as well.

The Overseas Filipino Worker phenomenon is a vital and growing sector of the society.

Labor Migration started during 1974, and has not stopped, (Ortigas, 2008). Many Filipino choose

to work abroad because of higher salary and leave their families for a long period of time. Millions

of Filipino workers were deployed to various part of the globe. So the numbers of children these

days experience the absence of their parent increases.

While 3.8 million Filipinos are total labor force are working abroad as temporary migrants.

While millions of children in the developing world grow up with at least one present living abroad

(Cortes, 2011).

In addition, people have been on the moved since human life began. Migration is neither a

new phenomenon, a failure of dependent nor a substitute for development, it is for individuals

move as part of the effort to improve the lives of their family, to learn new skills, to gain new

experience, to find a job or to free insecurity. Migration is an economics, social, political process
that affects those who moves, those who stay behind, and the places where they go. With the advent

of globalization, labor migration become the worldwide phenomenon. People are crossing borders

to search for better job opportunities and to provide a better future for their families. This

development is the flight of more children being left behind by either one both parent, leaving this

to care of extended family member.

According to Honig (2013), the situation is far from normal and is more likely to cause a

huge impact on the mental and emotional well-being of the children. The increasing amount of

absent parent become more alarming because without them, discipline is not enforced at home. An

experienced of many Filipino children, separation from one of their parents result of very great

impact of their lives. Unlike any other children with both parents present at home, rising up their

needs, more efforts and careful attention. Lot of students is affected because of their parents who

are working on abroad.

Moreover , it leads the children to a materialistic attitude of migrants. They become

extravagant especially when opportunities are good. There are many things having negative effects

on the child’s performance, behavior and how they grow up. If a child is misbehaving, it could be

traced to absence of parents, who could be physically there yet not giving their children a quality

time. parents are vital to the development and growth of their children. They play a crucial role in

every stage of childhood and play a positive role in helping them get the best out of life.

Most of the students who lose interest in their studies and become problem of the school

are often found to have OFW parents. Hey feel alone, hopeless, intimidate and considered

themselves less important because of parental roles into poor academic in school especially in the

attention and behavior.

Furthermore , every parent dream of giving their family a better life especially their

children. Working abroad could be just one of the option. It aims to find out the actual experiences

of children who have parent that is working abroad. The research tend to discover and find out

more about the experiences of the OFW’s children, how do they characterized their parents, and

how do they cope with the situation of not having parents beside them of being left behind. This

research aims to find out the actual experiences of adolescents who have parents that work abroad.

The researcher also want to understand what they go through and what are the things that affect

them are. The impact of migration varies-ranging from economic benefits not only for the family

but the country in general through its remittances to the security and well-being of the family of

migrants. But a major concern here is the social costs of migration, specifically, to the children left

behind (Reyes, 2008).

This study also intends to discover and find out more about the experiences of OFW or

Overseas Filipino Worker’s adolescent children. It seeks to find out what are the experiences of

Overseas Filipino Workers’ Adolescent Children, what are the perceived effects of having OFW

parents as adolescent, how do they characterize their relationship with their parents, and how do

they cope with the situation of not having a physically present and how do they cope with the

situation of having a physically present parent.
