Answer ALL two (2) questions.
Time allocated is 75 minutes. [ 25 +25 = 50 marks. ] Section : ______________________________________

Question 1 : [25 marks] [10+5+5+5 = 25 marks]

A 15kVA, 2300/230V single-phase Transformer X was subjected to the following test conditions:
Open Circuit Test : Rated voltage is applied to the high voltage winding and the low voltage winding is
open-circuited. Under this condition, the current into the high voltage winding is 0.21A and the power taken
from the high voltage source is 100W.
Short Circuit Test: A reduced voltage of 47V is applied to the high voltage winding and the low voltage
winding is short-circuited. Under this condition, the current flowing into the high voltage winding is 6.5A
and the power taken from the high voltage source is 160W.

a) From the data given above, determine the Voltage Regulation AND Efficiency of the transformer
when it is supplying at full load, 0.8 power factor lagging, and a terminal voltage of 230V. (17 marks)

b) Transformer Y from a different manufacturer has the same rating (15kVA, 2300/230V) with
Transformer X, but Transformer Y has a different series impedance of 0.02 + j0.05 ohm (referred
to the LV side) and zero core losses. Transformer Y is supplying the same load conditions as in
part(a).
Which transformer would you choose and justify why (calculations required)? (8 marks)

Question 3 : [25 marks] [10+5+10 = 25 marks]

A three-phase power system network with its ratings is as shown in figure below. The connected loads
are , Load 1 = 5MW + j2Mvar and Load 2 = 30MW + j10Mvar

It is required to hold the voltage at Bus_4 at 320 kV. Use 100 MVA base and 11kV as the voltage base
at the generator. Working in per-unit, determine:

a) The actual voltage of Bus_2 (V2). (Show all workings to receive full credit) [10 marks]
b) The actual internal emf (EG)of the generator. [5 marks]
c) Proof that current drawn from generator is equal to the sum of currents consumed by
Load 1(5MW+j2Mvar) and Load 2(30MW+j10Mvar) . (Hint: Use Bus_2 as reference.) [10 marks]
