Module 1 Theme: Learning English

How to follow this module

In this module you will find a quiz, various texts and videos on the subject of how
people in different countries learn English. This is also an opportunity to reflect on
your own language learning strategies. You will need between 3 -6 hours
depending on how much work you want to do and how interesting you find it. There
is a suggested written task at the end of the module that you may send in for
correction.

1 Start with the quiz. What would you expect the answers to be? Then look
at the answers. Do you find any of them surprising? Why?

2 Then watch the TED talk by Jay Walker “English Mania” and answer the
questions.

3 Read the texts: Why the Dutch speak English so incredibly well and Why
are the Dutch so good at speaking English?. Note down all the reasons you find.

4 Watch the video Why are the Brits so crap at languages? and answer the
questions

5 Go on to the synthesis worksheet now if you don’t have much time.

If you would like to go further into the subject, have a look at the other
documents before you complete the synthesis worksheet (recommended!)

At the end of the synthesis worksheet, there is a suggested written
