Abstract

This study determined the use of ipil-ipil extracted from lignin based wood for

the production of glass.

The process was similar to making paper since wood is an excellent material

due to its low conductivity and strong material when bound together. This process is

widely known as chemical pulping.

In order for the wood to achieve its glass form, it was treated with 250 ml

Sodium Sulfite and Sodium Hydroxide along with 500 ml Hydrogen Peroxide. The

Bleaching process takes roughly six days in order to complete. The researchers were

left with a translucent fibre which is then treated with polyster resins (coded R10-60)

and MEKP (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide). This is to ensure that the cells of the ipil-

ipil fibre are closely intact. Only one set up was made to compare with commercialized

glass.

The researchers made to two set ups to compare varying results. Setup A

holds more considerable results than setup B, this is due to the presence of more

epoxy in the setup. Both variants were treated with the same ratio of chemicals and

preserved with the same amount of time. Researchers have concluded that his

product is a great alternative for low end plexiglass
