L&T Powers ISRO’s Triumphant Return to the Moon

Supplies critical hardware to ISRO’s GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle

L&T has played a vital role in

powering Indian Space Research
Organisation’s (ISRO’s) second
historic mission to the moon,
Chandrayaan 2. A trusted Industry
partner of ISRO’s for over four and
half decades, L&T has been
involved in the production of a
range of hardware for all its
launch systems till date.

GSLV Mk-III is India’s most

powerful launch system to date,
capable of launching 4 ton class of
satellites to the Geo-Synchronous
Transfer (GTO) orbit. The GSLV
Mk-III will carry the Chandrayaan 2
to its designated orbit.

Today’s launch has successfully

placed in orbit the payload of
Chandrayaan 2 consisting of the
Orbiter, Rover Pragyan and Lander
Vikram which would perform soft
landing on the Moon’s surface
after 48 days.

The GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle was

powered at lift-off by twin S200
solid boosters comprising Head End, Middle, and Nozzle End Segments manufactured
at L&T’s Powai Aerospace Workshop. Besides manufacture, L&T also carried out
Proof Pressure Testing to ascertain the integrity and fabrication quality of the S200
solid boosters. Additionally, L&T supplied hardware like Umbilical & Honey Comb
Deck Panels used in the launch.

The launch vehicle was tracked in flight using the C & S Band Precision Mono-pulse
Tracking Radar developed and commissioned at SDSC Sriharikota by L&T Defence &
Aerospace and by a 32m Deep Space Network Antenna with subsystems
manufactured and system assembly done by L&T.
L&T manufactured a number of critical flight hardware, sub-systems & assemblies
for GSLV Mk-III at its facilities specifically dedicated for ISRO’s requirements. These
include S200 Segments (Head End, Middle & Nozzle End Segments); Ogive Payload
Fairing System; Thrust Block Sub-assembly; Umbilical Plates; and Honey Comb Deck
Panels. L&T also manufactured satellite sub systems like Reflector Deployment
Mechanisms (RDM) and Solar Array Deployment Mechanisms (SADM).

L&T has been lending crucial engineering inputs and manufacturing support by
building special ground test & qualification facilities, systems and equipment. The
Company has played a role in every space launch program of ISRO right from SLV3,
ASLV, PSLV, GSLV to the present GSLV Mk-III. This, besides helping build strategic
independence by creating facilities for indigenous production of aerospace grade
raw materials like Titanium and Aluminium alloys.

Today’s successful launch marks the beginning of ISRO’s momentous return to the
moon after the celebrated Chandrayaan 1 mission of 2008. After completing the
mission successfully, India will become only the fourth nation after US, Russia, and
China to have achieved the feat.

L&T is proud to be part of yet another moment of India’s glory. ◼
