Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year! We are looking forward working with you and your child in 6th
grade. We have many exciting learning opportunities planned this year. Here is some helpful
information to help you stay informed.

PE
6th Grade has PE every Thursday. Please remind your student to dress accordingly.
TOYS
Please help your 6th grader to leave toys at home. Furries, fake mustaches, gum, electronic
games, silly putty, and LEGO’s are some examples of 6th grade toys.
Cell Phones
Cell phones will remain in their backpacks until students leave at 3:20pm. They are not allowed
during school hours. If students use a cell phone during school hours, it will be taken to the
office. A guardian will be contacted to pick up the cell phone after school.
Students are welcome to use the phone on teachers desk or in the office, with permission.
Class Dojo
ALL email communication will be sent to you via Class Dojo. Please make sure to accept an
invitation to sign up as soon as possible. Teachers send important messages, updates and
homework using class dojo. Please check your class dojo email account often.
Dojo Points
Students receive points for paying attention, being respectful, and following directions during
class, recess, lunch and assemblies.
Students lose dojo points for disrespect, talking during learning time, bringing toys, using
cellphones in class, chewing gum and eating food on the playground.
Students who have reached 50 points at the end of each month are rewarded with a dojo party.
Some reward parties include: movies, Chromebook games, boardgames, treats, cellphone use.
Students who have NOT reached 50 dojo points at the end of the month will NOT participate in
the parties. They will stay with a 6th grade teacher to either do homework or to discuss how they
can reach 50 points the next month.
Parent’s will be contacted via class dojo or a phone call if a student misbehaves to a level that
requires more intensive remediation.
The 50 dojo points may change according to the time of year.
Students will be informed often about dojo points. Please ask your child about their dojo points
frequently.
Absences
If your child will be on vacation, they will keep a science journal to record their observations
each day they are absent. They must include a drawing of their observations.
Students will share their findings with the class. Please do not email me for make up work. Their
science journal is their make-up work.
If they are absent during a quiz, they can make up the quiz when they return.
End of Year Testing
We will begin end of year testing at the end of April. It will continue until the second week of
May. Please DO NOT plan vacations during this time.
Ski Season/Short Days
In order to release your child from school, a guardian MUST sign their child out at the front
office. Students can’t leave the room unless the office has contacted the designated classroom.
If students are leaving together for a ski day or extra curricular team activity, each child must be
excused by each of their guardians. Please contact the office for more information.
SEP Conferences/Grades/Planners
Please check gradebook often. A grade report will be sent home often throughout the school
year. Also, ask your student about their daily planners. The planners contain weekly schedules,
due dates and homework assignments.
Please bring your student to each SEP conferences (September and February).
Homework
Please remind your student to review their science journal 10-20 minutes each weekday. Please
record their study minutes on the monthly calendar sent home each month. If they study 420
minutes or more each month, they receive 10 dojo points.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given most Wednesday’s (no quizzes on short weeks). Students can retake
quizzes. They will not be allowed to retake quizzes a week before grades are due each semester.
If you check gradebook often, you can help your child stay caught up with quizzes. You can also
help remind them to retake quizzes before the cut off time each semester 😊
Field Trips
We have many fun field trips planned. One of them is Lagoon in May. Please beaware that the
price of Lagoon is non-refundable. The trip may be cut short due to weather or other unforeseen
circumstances.
Field Trips are reserved for all students! However, if a student is misbehaving or is disrespectful
at school a chaperone will be needed. If a chaperone is unavailable, the student will be asked to
work in the office during the time 6th grade is away.
I will contact the child’s parent at least two weeks prior to the field trip to ask for a
chaperone or inform the parent their child is no longer available to join us on the field trip
due to misbehaviors.
STEM Fair
All 6th Grade students are required to participate in the STEM fair. Please refer to your students
planner to stay informed about due dates. The final project is due Jan 14, 2019.
Birthday Treats
We love Birthday’s! Please email Ms Lehnardt (elehnardt@graniteschools.org) or email using
class dojo to set up a time to bring treats. The district allows store bought treats only.
