The American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (AAIDD, 2007) provides a tridimensional definition of intellectual disability which is currently the most widely accepted definition.
Intellectual disability is characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and adaptive behavior, which covers a range of everyday social and practical
skills (AAIDD). As defined by AACAP, adaptive skill areas include communication, self-care, home living, social skills, community use, self-direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure, and work.
Emotion
Emotions are often naive and immature but may improve with age.
Capacity for self-control is poor and impulsive and aggressive behavior is
not uncommon. Some are timid, withdrawn and shy.
