ON THE CONDUCT OF ONE-DAY TRAINING ON
DRRM (Disaster Risk Reduction Management)
NOVEMBER 20, 2018

Esperanza Elementary School held a 1-day training led by MDRRMO PILAR

together with the Administrator, Teaching staff, SPG Officers, and Grade 4-6 pupils.
Disaster Risk Reduction Management is a concept and practice of reducing disaster
risks through systematic efforts to analyze and reduce caused factors of disasters. This
was applied during the training to improve preparedness and early warning for any
adverse events.

The training started early at 7:30 a.m., with the rescue team pack and ready to
serve and instruct. An hour orientation was set to give the goal and importance of the
days training. The Head of the MDRRMO PILAR stressed about man-made and natural
calamities. What could these calamities may bring especially to the people. Then, what
will be the important role DRRM in disasters. He also shared the important tools for
rescue and survival, which called “the GO Bag”. After the orientation, the grade 4-6
pupils were divided into four groups. Each will complete a four-station DRRM training:
Station 1: BLS (Basic Life Support), Station 2: Lifting and Moving, Station 3: Bandaging,
and Station 4: Spine Board Management. The stations will be completed at end of the
day.

Station 1: BLS (Basic Life Support). In this station the pupils were taught the
basic response in saving someone else life. Each were given a scenario which was to
save a dying person in an accident. To rescue, you have to think your safety at all times.
Then, you will now attend to the needs of the person in the accident. If there was no
sign of consciousness, support the person by giving a 5 cycle of CPR until consciousness
was present. Such time that the real rescue team arrives to administer the procedures
and to transport the person to a nearby hospital.

Station 2: Lifting and Moving. To secure safety of the person injured, pupils were
taught how to lift and move persons injured. The MDRRMO PILAR Team showed the
different technique, body posture and position during the lift and move. Pupils need to
carry the lift and move on their own to show how much they learn. They actualize each
procedure with joy. Every grade participated in the said activity.

Station 3: Bandaging. This must be a crucial skill of every rescuer to know how.
Pupils were given orange triangular bandages. These bandages will be a great help to
support any injuries like bleeding, wounds, and fracture. First a demonstration was
carried out by the MDRRMO PILAR Team on the different types of bandaging for every
different injury. The pupils listen carefully while the team was demonstrating. It was
paid of during the re-demonstration when the pupils perform the bandaging to their co-
pupils.

Station 4: Spine Board Management. The last station taught the pupils the proper
use of spine board. Spine board is where the person injured is placed in case a spine
injury and other fracture occurred. A car accident scenario was dealt by the pupils.
Each having a role as the team leader, logistics, some rescue member and a person to
assist the crowd control. Before the lift each skill obtained from station 1 – 3 was carried
out. The pupils significantly performed the tasks well.

The finale: Simulation. After the training from station 1-4, a short, intense, yet
realistic simulation of a of all the skill learned have been demonstrated. It was a car
accident, which involves three persons injured, of course with different role to take, the
pupils set to rescue. The three team of pupils independently administer the rescue
operations. They all responded to the extent of what they know and to what they were
taught. Everyone did there best, the person injured was rescued. At the end of the day
it was concluded that the training was significantly successful.
