Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937)

He born on 30-8-1871

 Learned physics in J.J.

Thomson’ lab.

He is known as father of

nuclear physics.

He is famous for his

Gold-foil experiment

Rutherford ‘Scattering’

• In 1909 Rutherford undertook a series of experiments

• He fired a (alpha) particles at a very thin sample of gold foil
• According to the Thomson model the a particles would only
be slightly deflected
• Rutherford discovered that they were deflected through large angles
and could even be reflected straight back to the source

Rutherford Scattering (cont.)
Rutherford interpreted this result by suggesting that the a
particles interacted with very small and heavy particles

DRAWBACKS OF RUTHERFORD MODEL OF ATOM
The Rutherford,s model explains the stucture of atom is very simple
way. But it suffers from the following drawbacks:
1.Ruterford proposed that electron revolve at a high speed in circular orbit
around the positively charged nucleus .When a charged particle i.e., electron
revolve around positively charged nucleus, it need to be accelerated so as keep it
moving in circular orbit

2.However according to electromagnetic theory, whenever a charged particle such

as electron is accelerated around another charged centre[nucleus]which are
under force of attraction, there would be continuous radiations of energy. This
loss of energy would slow down the speed of the electron and eventually the
electron would fall into the nucleus atom would collapse. But such collapse does
not occur. Thus, Rutherford,s model could not explain the stability of atom.
