UNIT 7 Before reading the passage, answer the questions.

1. What do you know about power plant?

2. What the function of power plant?
3. What the energy source can be used as prime mover?

POWER PLANT
Electricity is the only form of energy which is easy to produce, easy to
transport, easy to use and easy to control. So, it is mostly the terminal form of
energy for transmission and distribution. Electricity consumption per capita is the
index of the living standard of people of a place or country.
Electricity in bulk quantities is produced in power plants, which can be of
the following types: (a) Thermal, (b)Nuclear, (e) Hydraulic, (d) Gas turbine and (e)
Geothermal. Thermal, nuclear and geothermal power plants work with steam as the
working fluid and have many similarities in their cycle and structure. Gas turbine
plants are often used as peaking units. They run for short periods in a day to meet
the peak load demand. They are, however, being increasingly used in conjunction
with a bottoming steam plant in the mode of combined cycle power generation.
Hydraulic power plants are essentially multipurpose. Besides generating power,
they also cater for irrigation, flood control, fisheries, afforestation, navigation, etc.
They are, however, expensive and take long time to build. There is also considerable
opposition against their erection due to the ecological imbalance they produce.
Geothermal power plants can be built only in certain geographical locations.
Thermal power plants generate more than 80 % of the total electricity
produced in the world. Fossil fuels, viz, coal, fuel oil and natural gas are the energy
source, and steam is the working fluid. Steam is also required in man industries for
process heat. To meet the dual need of power and process heat, cogeneration plants
are often installed.

Exercise 1
Which statement best express the main idea of the text!
1. Ease in producing electricity.
2. The power plant is a device that produces electricity.
3. The types of power plants include Thermal, Nuclear, Hydraulic, Gas turbine and
Geothermal.

Exercise 2
Decide whether the following statements are true or false by referring to the
information in the text. Then, make the necessary changes so that the false
statement becomes true.
1. Electricity in bulk quantities is produced by people.
2. Electricity must go through the process of transmission and distribution before
consumption.
3. 80 % of the total electricity in the world producing by thermal power plants
generate.
4. Nuclear and geothermal have the principle of working together when generating
electricity.
5. Gas turbine plants operate in a short time to meet peak load demand.
6. Another function of the hydro power plants is agriculture and fisheries services.
7. Hydropower plants are less multipurpose.
8. In the steam generator, the fuel used is fossil fuels where steam is the working
fluid.

LET’S TALK: Describing Things
Describe a function of an appliance or apparatus.
When we answer the questions what does X do?
We describe the function of X

Example:
a. What does a turbine do?
b. Rotating generator’s rotor

We can emphasize by using the patern.

The function of a turbine is to rotating generator’s rotor
First, you must match the components the column B with the phrases in column A.
Then, ask and answer questions like the example above:
a. Transformer
b. Governor
c. Generator
d. Stator
e. Rotor
f. Boiler
g. Prime mover
h. Pulvurizer

1. As heater to boil the water

2. To organize steam or gas for turbine speed
3. A static part of generator
4. Device to step up or step down voltage
5. A source to make turbine rotate
6. To crush coal material
7. Tranform mechanic energy to electrical energy
8. A rotate part of generator
