Assigned: 5 September 2019 Due: 13th Sep. 2019
Maximum Marks: 100

Q1. Three cylindrical rods made up of steel (ABC), brass (CDE), and aluminum (EFG) are
joined at C and E with rigid supports at A and G as shown in Figure 1. For the shown loading
conditions, we have 𝐸𝑠 = 200 GPa, 𝐸𝑏 = 105 GPa and 𝐸𝑎 = 72 GPa with corresponding
diameters as 40, 20, 40 mm, respectively.
a) Determine the reaction force at A and G
b) Determine the deflection at point B

Note: Solve the problem analytically (by hand) first and then develop a finite element model
and solve the problem in ABAQUS. Extract the output of deformation field along the length
of the bar from ABAQUS. Plot the analytical results and ABAQUS results using MATLAB on
the same figure.
Hint: Use sufficient number of Truss elements in ABAQUS to model the bar. Create three
partitions in the 1D domain and define three different sections with different cross-sectional
areas and material properties while setting up the problem in ABAQUS. [50 Marks]
Q2. Find the displacement field of the uniform cylindrical bar as shown in Figure 2. The body
force per unit length and elastic modulus are given as 𝑏(𝑥) = 𝑏0 𝑥 2 and 𝐸(𝑥) = 𝐸0 𝑒 ∝𝑥 . The
relevant data is as follows:
d = 0.05 m, L = 0.5 m, 𝑏0 = 8 × 106 N/m, 𝐸0 = 70 × 109 Pa and α = 5.

Note: Solve the problem analytically first (by hand), and then validate the solution by solving
the resulting Ordinary Differential Equation in MAPLE with appropriate boundary conditions.
Next, develop a finite element model and solve the problem in ABAQUS. Extract the output
of the displacement field along the length of the bar from ABAQUS. Plot the analytical results
obtained by hand, through use of MAPLE and from ABAQUS in the same figure using
MATLAB.

Hint: Use sufficient number of Truss elements in ABAQUS to model the bar. To prescribe a
spatially varying Elastic/Young’s modulus, use temperature as a parameter. Thus, predefine a
temperature field in ABAQUS in terms of an analytical function and specify the Young’s
modulus in the Property module as a function of temperature in tabular format. Also, in the
Load module, define the body force by means of an analytical function so as to specify the
given body force distribution. [50 Marks]
