1. In the event of an emergency dial 0000, then state the building number, room number and type of
assistance required.
2. If you require the Safety Community Team for assistance please ring 4444 from an internal phone or
9266 4444, then state the building number, room number and type of assistance required.

Students working in Curtin Engineering laboratories do so under the condition that they abide by
the following safety rules and regulations.Curtin Engineering Safety Notes & Procedures can be
viewed in any laboratory or the Technical Supervisor’s / Laboratory Manager’s offices. All students
must read, sign and submit a copy of this form before entering any Curtin Engineering laboratory.
3. Always act responsibly in any laboratory.
4. No food or beverages shall be taken into any laboratory.
5. Students who are affected, or suspected to be affected, by alcohol or drugs shall be excluded from the
laboratory. Curtin University by-laws state that smoking anywhere on Universtity property is prohibited.
6. Appropriate clothing and footwear shall be worn in all laboratories. Footwear must be non-slip,
fully closed-in and compliant with Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS2210.
7. Safety glasses,ear protection and dust masks must be worn where applicable – in compliance with
instructions from designated Technicial Officer.
8. Cases and bags shall not be placed on or under laboratory benches.
9. All electrical circuits shall be checked by the Laboratory Supervisor prior to power being switched on.
10. No electrical circuit should be switched on longer than necessary for testing. Do not walk away and
leave an electrical circuit switched on. Always work in student pairs if possible.
11. On completion of laboratory use, test equipment shall be switched off, bench power shall be switched
off, all electrical connections disengaged and all equipment shall be returned (including test leads) to
their original locations.
12. No sitting, standing, climbing, pushing or lounging on trolleys, benches or equipment is permitted.
13. Students shall not enter laboratory areas without the permission of the Lab supervisor or Technical
Supervisor.
14. No internal repairs and / or pre-set adjustments shall be made to laboratory equipment by students or
staff other than the technical staff, unless prior technical staff knowledge and authorisation is sought.
15. All faulty equipment shall be reported to the designated Laboratory Supervisor and/or Technical Officer.
16. Private use of laboratories / equipment shall not be permitted.
17. Student’s personal equipment, such as test equipment and computers, shall not be brought into the
Faculty laboratories without prior Technical Staff knowledge and authorisation.
18. Equipment shall not be removed or relocated from a laboratory without Technical Staff authorisation.
19. All forms to be signed and submitted to the supervising lecturer at the time of the first science labatory.
Non-compliance with these rules and regulations may result in suspension and/or expulsion from
the facilities and responsibility for restitution
