It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as
pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw
and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist
you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need
someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in.

Fitting the support rails to the faces
The first step is to fit the 2×4 supports to the front and back faces of the gazebo. Drill
pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″
screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled. Make sure
you recess the supports 3/4″ from the face of the posts. Use a spirit level to make sure
the supports are horizontal.
Next, attach the 1×6 balusters to the supports, as described in the diagram. Place the
balusters equally-spaced and secure them to the supports by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add
glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the components.

Fitting the support slats
Next, fit the supports to the front face of the gazebo, as described in the diagram. Drill
pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2′ screws.
Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Adjust the size of the
railings to suit your needs.

Fitting the hand rails
One of the last steps of the project is to fit the handrail to the structure. Drill pocket
holes at both ends of the 2×4 slats and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″ screws. In
addition, insert screws through the handrail into the supports, as to enhance the bond of
the components.
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes
with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Check out the rest of the deck
projects, to see more ways to improve the look of your garden.
Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want
to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the rectangular gazebo.
