DEBATE SOCIETY

ANALYSIS

Vision

To be an initiative known for driving the open exchange of ideas among students of Divine Word
College of Calapan (DWCC) and provide expertise necessary to foster their communication, critical
thinking and creative skills.

Mission

The Debate Society connects, supports and inspires students through competitive speech and
debate.

Objectives

 To provide a significant training ground for the development of students' communicative

abilities.
 To provide opportunities for students to practices and share their skills development.
 To create learning situations in which students develop proficiencies based on sound
educational and communication theories.
 To be able to compete in Mahalta Cup[1].

Debate tournaments in DWCC before use Oxford format and just recently they have adapted the
Asian Parliamentary Debate format since it is the format used in Mahalta Cup and other debate
competitions outside the campus. The organization conducted a seminar to all interested students
regarding this transition.

One of the contests held during Intramurals 2019 was the debate competition attended by
various schools of DWCC. The mechanics and guidelines used during the contest came from the Debate
Society. They should have run this contest since they know more about the event however the Student
Council gave the authority to Peer Facilitator’s Club to oversee the flow of the tournament which led to
questionable results.

[1]
Mahalta Cup is a debate competition joined by representatives from different campuses in Mindoro.
INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

Strengths

1. Contact from debaters outside the campus

The organization has contact to different debaters outside the campus who can teach
aspiring and potential representative of DWCC for Mahalta Cup.

Weaknesses

1. Insufficiency of funds

According to the president of the organization, their supplemental fund from the school
is only P 150. 00. There is also no membership fee that could be the source of funds.

2. Lack of seminars, training and workshops

As of today, the organization has conducted only one seminar and the attendees were
from different schools who unfortunately were not part of the organization.

3. Lack of potential members

One of the objectives of the organization is to compete in Mahalta Cup yet due to
insufficient training and seminars, the organization failed to produce potential debaters to
represent our school to the said cup.

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

Opportunities

1. Mahalta Cup

It is a great opportunity for these students to be able to represent DWCC in this

competition. As the Home of Quality Education, DWCC should produce outstanding debaters
and Debate Society will be a training ground for these aspiring students.
2. Debate in Intramurals

Every year, there are a lot of queries regarding the said competition and most of these
are about the guidelines of the contest and its implementation. These problems could be
eliminated if the facilitators have knowledge about the event and no other group could do that
except the Debate Society. It is also an opportunity for them to observe the potential
representatives of DWCC.

Threats

1. Student’s Enthusiasm
Most of the students prefer to be an audience rather than a debater. In our survey
shown in Appendix A only 13% of the students want to join the organization.
2. Other Curricular Organizations
There are many established curricular organization where students where already part
of. Debate Society also lacks in promotion of their organization. In our survey, there are 31% of
students who has no idea that there is an organization for aspiring debaters.

General Environment

1. Demographic forces
The organization is open for all college students, both male and female, who must be
enrolled in DWCC.

2. Sociocultural forces
Debate has always been a highlight during Intramurals that’s why this organization was
formed. However, students prefer to watch debates rather that to participate.

Porter’s Five Forces

1. Competition in the Industry

Competition is low since different organizations in the institution have different market
segments.
2. Potential of New Entrants into the Industry
The threat for new entrants is low. In our survey shown in Appendix A, 100 students
were asked if they will join Debate Society next year, 83% voted “No” which shows no
enthusiasm to the organization so forming another organization related to debate would be
impractical.
3. Power of Supplier
The Student Affairs Office has the authority to remove the accreditation if the
organization will not follow the requirements. So the power of the supplier is high.
4. Power of Buyer
In this case, Buyer refers to the students who will join the organization. The power of
the buyer is high since it is the option of the students if they will join or not.
5. Threat of Substitute Product
The threat for substitute organizations is high. DWCC provides different curricular
groups that students may opt to join instead of Debate Society.

BUSINESS LEVEL STRATEGY

Segmentation- The organization is open for all students unlike other organizations which has a
certain market for their members. In our recent survey shown in Appendix A, formation of an
organization just like a business should consider its market segment. In this case, Debate Society was
formed without considering the number of students who would engage in the organization. Only 9% of
the students want to join debate tournaments and the rest wants to just attend seminar and/or
trainings/workshops.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Debate Society has a vertical organizational structure especially is has few members. Its officers
were not divided according to specialties and the decision making mostly is from the President.

QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES

Factor Analysis of Survey Data

According to the article written by Hall, factor analysis is a data reduction and analysis technique
often used with survey data, making the method popular among market researchers. Factor analysis
explores correlations in available data to identify underlying, unmeasured factors that could explain
those relationships. (January 25, 2019)
IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to provide Debate Society a consulting service that will help them improve
their operations. Specifically, it sought to answer the following problems:

1. The set of activities planned are not in line with objective of the organization.
2. Debate Society lacks members which prevents the opportunities from being achieved.
3. The organization lacks proper internal control.

Problems explained

1. The set of activities planned are not in line with objective of the organization. (Based on
interview)

Main Objective:

To be able to compete in
Mahalta Cup

To provide opportunities for

To provide a significant training

ground for the development of
students' communicative
abilities.

Figure1.1 Relationship between the Objective and the Activity.

Figure 1.1 explains the Framework No. 1 which states that “Problems prevent the goals
and objectives from being achieved.” The activity conducted last July???? Was about the ???
which is totally unrelated to the objective set by the organization.
2. Debate Society lacks members which prevents the opportunities from being achieved.
Framework No. 2 states that “Problem identification should consider not only
‘problems’ or ‘challenges’, but also constraints on opportunities that are preventing the goals
and objectives from being achieved.
Though survey results as shown in Appendix A. IV. provided 93% support if DWCC joins
Mahalta Cup, Appendix A. II. showed only 13% of the respondents are willing to join the
organization next year which deters the opportunity for Debate Society to join the said cup.
3. The organization lacks proper internal control.

Information and Risk Assessment

Communication

Control Environment Ineffective Internal Control

Monitoring Control Activities

Figure 1.2 Cause and Effect Analysis of Internal Control

Figure 1.2 adapted the COSO Framework for evaluating internal control. In terms of
Information and Communication, Debate Society does not have regular meetings where they
should lay down their plans for their organization. Risk Assessment includes the company- wide
objective which was already explained in Figure 1.1. Policies and procedures are part of Control
Activities where in this case, Debate Society cannot provide since they do not have regular
transactions or activities. The same reason applies for Monitoring. Control Environment includes
organizational structure and commitment to competence. This relates to the unrelated seminar
conducted with the company objective which in not very competent.
FRAMEWORK IN IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

According to an article published by Gartenstein, she mentioned that when identifying

problems, the following should be taken into account:

1. Problems prevent the goals and objectives from being achieved. This should include the full
range of objectives identified in the previous step – including objectives for different levels of
planning and markets.

2. Problem identification should consider not only ‘problems’ or ‘challenges’, but also constraints
on opportunities that are preventing the goals and objectives from being achieved.

3. Identification should be based on empirical observations, such as data and information obtained
from surveys, demand modelling, interviews and studies from a wide range of sources. (August
3, 2018)

Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) Framework

The COSO model defines internal control as “a process, effected by an entity’s board of directors,
management and other personnel, designed to provide reasonable assurance of the achievement of
objectives in the following categories:

 Effectiveness and efficiency of operations

 Reliability of financial reporting
 Compliance with applicable laws and regulations”

In an “effective” internal control system, the following five components work to support the
achievement of an entity’s mission, strategies and related business objectives.

1. Control Environment
2. Risk Assessment
3. Control Activities
4. Information and Communication
5. Monitoring
These components work to establish the foundation for sound internal control within the
company through directed leadership, shared values and a culture that emphasizes accountability for
control.

B. INTERVIEW

INTERVIEWER 1 : Lisseth Bulaklak INTERVIEWEE 1: Roy Macunat

Senior Consultant President

INTERVIEWER 2: Eula Marie Alterado INTERVIEWEE 2: Rian Festin

Senior Consultant Vice President

President: Mga 2017

Vice President: Inspired po kami by Mahalta Cup.

naghandle, prinopose naming na parang mas maganda yung Asian Parliamenetary since Asian
Parliamentary yung ginagamit even outside the campus. Then yun po ang simula, we invited a guest

Vice President: I invited Frather Jeffrey Causapin from Holy Infant Academy.

kasi kami yung Debate Society.
kami dahil samin naka align yung trabaho, dapat kami nagintindi. Sabi ng iba, narinig lang namin na
baka maging bias kasi most members namin ay AB tapos isang Accountancy lang. Hindi na kami
pinagintindi. Ang pinagintindi na lang yung Peer

Vice President: Kaya po pagdating nong Intrams, medyo gumulo yung mechanics.

Interviewer 1: Sino pong nag invite sa Peer?

Vice President: SC yun.

Vice President: Humingi sila samin then binigyan ko since sabi nila ako daw ang may pinaka
malawak na kaalaman don so ako ang nagbigay nong mechanics which is national naman yon.

siguro makalabas kami and makasali ng Mahalta.

member. Para aware sila na may ganong organization.

Interviewer 2: Ano pong ginagawa nyo para maka invite kayo ng member from other school?

Vice President: Ang unang unang binigay namin ay nag pa workshop kami. Workshop/ training yun.

Vice President: Siguro yung atleast once a month ay mayroong workshop.

Vice President: Dahil hindi kami makalabas outside the box. Since bago lang naman yung debate
society, yung mga members namin kasi ay mga bago din lang, mga freshman, even I, freshman lang

President: Second year lang po.

Vice President: Tapos second year pa lang, senior na agad namin. So yun po, siguro yung pagiging
magpapapirma? Kasi nasanay kami nong high school na papaalam ka lang sa principal, even without
the letter, ayos na.

Interviewer 2: So ang pinakang problema nyo lang po ay about sa population nyo?

Vice President: Opo.

Interviewer 2: Sa funds po? Yung sa pag mamanage po?

President: In terms of funds po, bawal kasing maningil pag may seminar, pinagbawal ng SAAO, ayaw

May dedication sila.

Way back kasi
