INTRODUCTION
“Blessed are the poor” quoted from the bible as the words of God,
but is it applicable to this money minded and competitive era, guess
not. So, what if the poor are blessed, those blessings do not do them
any good when it comes to get their basic needs and earn their
dreams which is dependent upon education which in turn depends
upon money, so where are the poor in this. The poor children are
always underprivileged in India even with all the lucrative schemes
run by the government, they aren’t getting much benefit from them.
The underprivileged children of India need our help as living under
poor conditions and unhealthy environment, the children get
exposed to hard realities of life. It is a known fact that children in
marginalized background are mostly the one who is deprived of
joyful learning experiences. In all over the country government
schools, uninspiring curriculum and insufficiently skilled teachers
have resulted in high student dropout and absenteeism. Teacher
accountability is low, and they are burdened with tasks. Children are
going to school but not learning much beyond “floor level task”.
With the bursting population what our country currently needs a
firm education system as a base for which they need to change the
way, they deliver it. Budding minds need something to attract them
enough for them to glue to it, which would be co-curricular activities
and other fun activities in school. Plantation, cleanliness drive and
occasional lectures on different social matters should also be
provided for shaping the pupils in cultured citizens, not just some
educated bums who just know how to sign their name on the literacy
poll.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND CAUSE OF THE
PROBLEM
Since I was in my ancestral home for some time I decided to carry
out the project there itself and the village is quite remote so I
decided to go with teaching the children there both in the schools
and at home. The main problems and their causes are listed below:

Problem1: Even though there are many children in the village but
not many attend school.

Cause: Most of the families there are poor so they don’t feel the
importance of proper education that’s why they don’t send their
children to school and the ones who even send them to do it for the
mid-day-meal with seldom being for the purpose of the studying.

Problem2: The government school doesn’t attract many students

to go and study as compared to the private ones even when they
have much more benefiting schemes for the villagers.

Cause: Many children want to go to private schools instead of the

government school either to boast it to others or just for the sake of
going to a private school.

Problem3: Students are not interested in co-curricular activities

and the teachers also don’t encourage such tasks in school resulting
in a much more boresome environment.

Cause: Most of the student come to school for the sake of meals
or playing with the others and their repeated behavior generally
causes the teacher to lose interest in teaching them much less other
co-curricular activities
OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED
Based on the observation I made identifying the problems and
causes of the poor education system I had a few ideas to work on:

• I asked two schools for letting me teach in there. One being a

private and other government to properly understand the
children of different social standing.
• I wanted to teach the students some basic along with some
non-curricular and co-curricular subjects including eco, social
and arts education.
• I also wanted to do a cleanliness drive and plantation during
my stay there.
• To approached the parents of irregular students to convince
them to send their children to the school

VARIOUS STEPS TAKEN TO ACHIEVE THE

OBJECTIVES
Once all the objectives were set in stone I got permission from the
respective Principals of both the schools to follow my plan and I
also got special permission to do the drives there. I spent a few days
on-site with the teachers to understand how their existing daily
routine works, and what its limitations and shortcomings are which
were possible and plausible to be removed with some effort. On
seeing the student’s response to this new learning experience driven
by a different teaching pattern in their classroom, I set out to find
ways to make this experience better for the learners and teachers. I
also:

• Interacted with teachers, faculties and other staff members to

have a solid understanding of how well the existing teaching
plan was going as well as the different schemes provided by the
government which was playing enough role in attracting the
students
• Since I was in my hometown so it was quite easy for me to
gather other helpers also. I asked my acquaintances to join me
in completing the project
• After devising a plan with everyone I first started to give the
children regular language lessons to get familiar with them and
then I proceeded with the other subjects and co-curricular
tasks
• Involved me in several brainstorming sessions and discussions
with the staff and finally decided upon which problem
statements to focus on following design thinking and other
powerful methodologies on the way
• Concluded that the children at the government school neede
some regular fun activities to keep them interested in coming
to school as well as to maintain a hygienic and greener
environment.
• The students of private schools were better off so the main
agenda there was to teach them about other subjects than their
syllabus.
• I also helped in the distribution of clothes and study material
which were offered by the government as well as I urged the
villagers to gather a fund for giving out necessary items to the
children and carry out the plantation.
• I held a cleanliness drive in the school and it's surrounding as
due to the bad weather the school was a mess and needed a
quick fix
• I also organized a joint plantation with both the schools and
planted dozens of trees and numerous flowers.

EFFECTIVENESS OF PROJECT
The teachers, staffs, and students were very welcoming to the idea
and to me and my helpers. They also were very satisfied with the
new subjects for a change and knowledge as well as the co-curricular
activities introduced

• Most of the local students who weren’t usually present in

the classes started coming because of the persuasions to
their parents
• Students were most enthusiastic about the plantation and
they participated in large numbers for it and helped in
planting flowers in the schools and trees in the surrounding
• The teachers also adapted to the new teaching method and
the other activities
• After the distribution of the study material and the clothes,
there was a significant rise in the daily attendance
• I also taught the children of boards a few tricks and tips for
scoring more marks in the upcoming exams
• A few of the children from the government primary school
were motivated for higher studies
• Many students from upper classes showed their interest in
what path to take after the completion of their school and
sought guidance
CONCLUSION
A child born to poor parents means total exposure to malnutrition,
diseases, inferior living conditions, inadequate sanitation, and many
other hardships. Although the child himself is not responsible for
poverty but hardships are bound to befall him. But who is
responsible for poverty in our nation? There are many reasons but
one of the main and core problems is Illiteracy which generally
branches out many other reasons for poverty such as
unemployment, low rate of economic development, social and
political factors or even population explosion(lack of sex education
and family planning).
Not just the government, but all the people of India need to focus
on eradicating Illiteracy and poverty, not only by pooling in
monetarily, but a total change of attitude is required. There is no
denying of fact that more supportive hands can share the burden
easily,so everyone must join hands to address the plight of
underprivileged children.Only then can we triumph over this
massive enemy.
As for this project in my area in nutshell, we can say that for
maintaining a quality education alongside a satisfactory quantity of
students the continuation of fun co-curricular activities with a regular
dose of different subjects is needed. If possible, plausibly the local
graduates when having free time should help in organizing these
drives and donate some study material.
The buds thirst can only be quenched with warm sunlight to let
them bloom into iridescent blossom.
