I. BLUEPRINT OF LIFE (Protein and Nucleic Acid)

A. Essential idea: Proteins have a very wide range of functions in living organisms.

One of the central ideas in Biology is that structure dictates function. Above you can see insulin in its

secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures. Polypeptides vary hugely in the combination and number of

amino acids that they are composed from. Even if we consider a single polypeptide it's properties, and

hence its function, would vary greatly depending on its level of structure. Insulin can exist in all these forms,

but the active form, which controls blood glucose levels, is a tertiary structure.

B. Nucleic acids

DNA stores the genetic information of an organism and transmits that information from one generation to

another.

RNA translates the genetic information contained in DNA into proteins needed for all cellular function.

RNA and DNA are unbranched polymers (monomers: nucleotides).

A nucleotide is composed of:

Nitrogen-containing bases (amines)

Sugars (monosaccharaides)

Phosphate
C. DNA is called the blueprint of life

-because it is the instruction manual to create, grow, function and reproduce life on Earth similar to a

blueprint of a house.
