Activity 1: Web addresses
1. What sort of organisation might the website www.survey.gov.uk belong to,
and where would it be located?

2. Which of the following top-level domain names might a charity use and why?
(.com, .org, .gov or .sch)

3. What is the advantage for a company of a .co.uk address, or a .com address?


Why do some companies have both? E.g. Google or Hotmail?

Activity 2: IP addresses
All web addresses (URLs) have a corresponding IP address, held on a domain name
server (DNS).

Use a website such as http://www .who.is to find out the missing IP addresses and
domain names, and where the domain name server is located.

Activity 3: Domain name availability


Think of a name that you could use for a website of your own.

Use a website such as www.uk2.net to search for your domain name to check its
availability. You can also see what it might cost to buy.
