ALBERTO HURTADO

Santiago, April 12th 2019

To whom it may concern,

I am writing you on behalf of Raúl Devia, who is applying to participate on the EdTech
Winter School “Tecnologías para la Educación Centradas en las Personas” organized by
Fundación Ceibal.

I have known Raúl since 2013, when he was a student of the course on Qualitative
Research Methods that I taught for undergrads at the Department of Sociology, Universidad
Alberto Hurtado. Later on, Raúl also assisted to the specialized course on the Science and
Technology Studies that I teach at the same department. On both instances, Raúl appeared as
a participative and applied student, which resulted in a very good assimilation of the contents
of the courses. For this reason, I did not doubt to accept him as a student in the Master degree
in Science, Technology and Society that I direct at UAH, degree that he started on April 2019.

Along with his academic merits, I consider that Raúl's topic of interest is very much in
line with the call of the EdTech winter school. Despite the current centrality of videogames in
the patterns of entertainment and sociability of young children and adolescents in Chile, little
social research has been done in the country regarding the possible educational role that
videogames can have, especially in contexts of social vulnerability. For this reason, Raúl’s
research on the topic would certainly be a contribution towards better understanding this
central issue.

In sum, given my previous experience with him and his research interests, I highly
recommend Raúl’s application to the EdTech Winter School.

Best Regards,
