Combustion of Alkane:
General formula for the combustion of alkane is
given below
CnH2n+2 + (3n+1)/2 O2 ---------> nCO2 +
(n+1)H2O
Where n=number of carbon atoms.
For Pentane the equation will be
n=5
C5H2×5+2 + (3×5+1)/2 O2 -----> 5CO2 +
(5+1)H2O
C5H10+2 + (15+1)/2 O2 ----> 5CO2 + 6H2O
C5H12 + 16/2 O2 ------> 5CO2 + 6H20
C5H12 + 8O2 -----> 5CO2 + 6H2O
Hints:
👉 This formula is use for the balancing of
combustion equation of alkane.
👉 We can find four different variables from this
formula.
Examples:
1) What is the number of moles required for the
complete combusion of 5 moles of butane???
Solution:
Moles of Oxygen will be find by the following
formula
(3n+1)/2
So
here butane is given and for butane n=4 so
(3×4+1)/2
(12+1)/2
13/2=7.5 moles
Now
1 mole Butane=7.5 moles Oxygen
4 moles butane= X
So
X=4×7.5
X=30 moles
General Formula For Alkene's combustion
CnH2n + 3n/2 O2 -----> nCO2 + nH2O
General formula For Alkyne's combustion
CnH2n-2 + (3n-1)/2 ----> nCO2 + (n-1)H2O
