BTECH AUTO I
COURSE CODE: MCE 411 COURSE TITLE: MECHANICS OF FLUID
INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTION
TIME ALLOWED: TWO AND HALF HOURS

QUESTION ONE
a) An oil with 𝜌 = 900 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚3 and 𝑣 = 0.0002 𝑚2 ⁄𝑠 flows upward through
an inclined pipe as shown in Fig. 1. Assuming steady laminar flow ,
i) Verify that the flow is up and find the
ii) Head loss between section 1 and section 2
iii) Flowrate
iv) Velocity and
v) Reynolds number.

Is the flow really laminar?

(take 𝑔 = 9.807)

P2 = 250,000 Pa
40 o

P1 = 350,000 Pa,

Z1= 0

b) Oil (𝑣 = 0.0003 𝑚2 ⁄𝑠) enters a 50 mm diameter tube. Estimate the
entrance length if the flow rate is 1 L/s.

QUESTION TWO

a) For a reversible isentropic process, show that

γ−1
𝑇2 P2 γ
= [( ) ]
𝑇1 P1

b) If 4 kg of a perfect gas with a molecular weight of 36 had its temperature

increased by 2 K when 6.4 kJ of work was done on it in an insulated
constant volume chamber, determine Cv and Cp.

QUESTION THREE
a) Air at 15 oC and 101325 Pa is compressed to a pressure of 345000 Pa. If the
compression is isothermal and reversible, what is the final specific volume?
How much work is done per kilogram of the gas? (take the gas constant of
air to be 287 J/kg K and ϒ= 1.4)

b) An airplane flies at 360 m/s through air at -10 oC and 40 kPa. Is the airplane
supersonic?

c) Methane at 22 oC flows through a pipeline at a velocity of 416.4 m/s. is the

flow subsonic, sonic, supersonic or hypersonic? (take 𝑔 = 9.807)
