A320 FAMILY
This course is common for A318, A319, A320, and A321 because all four
aircraft have the same type rating. We will use the A320 as the generic term and
occasionally refer to the other three when appropriate.
In this presentation, you will see a basic presentation of the A320 family.
The A320 family is the most advanced family of single-aisle aircraft in service
today, with Fly-By-Wire flight controls.
The A318, A319, A320, A321 are twin engine subsonic medium range aircraft.
The family offers a choice of powerplants:
- International Aero Engines and CFM International for A319, A320 and A321.
- Pratt & Whitney and CFM International for A318.

In this topic the fuselage, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, and wings station
numbers are presented.
The station (STA) number is the distance in milimeters of the cross-section from
a reference point. The reference (X=0) for all structural measurements in the X-
axis is located 2.54 m (100 in) forward of the aircraft.
For the vertical stabilizer the reference station is Z=0 at the vertical Z-axis. Due
to the fin tip extension, the A318 station numbers have changed. The new rib
12N is on the STA5970.
For the horizontal stabilizer the reference station is Y=0 at the horizontal Y-axis.
For wings, the reference station is the wing reference axis that is located at 1868
milimeters (73.54 in) from the aircraft X-axis.
COCKPIT SEATS
The cockpit is equipped with adjustable seats for two crew members, a third
occupant seat and, depending on the configuration, a folding seat for a fourth
occupant.
Various furnishings and equipment are fitted in the cockpit for the comfort,
convenience and safety of the occupants.
OVERHEAD PANEL
The controls of most aircraft systems are located on the overhead panel.
The overhead panel is divided into two main sections:
- a FWD section including the system panels,

GLARESHIELD
The Flight Control Unit (FCU), includes the Electronic Flight Instrument
System (EFIS) controls, and is used for control and monitoring of the Auto
Flight System (AFS).
It is located on the glareshield.
The "Master Warning" and the "Master Caution" lights are also located on the
glareshield.
Six interchangeable Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) are located on the main
instrument panel.
Two of them are dedicated to the Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitoring
(ECAM).
The others are two Primary Flight Displays (PFDs) and two Navigation Displays
(NDs).
Stand-by instruments and landing gear controls are also located on the main
instrument panel.
On the A318, the CRTs are replaced by Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs)
and the stand-by instruments are integrated and called ISIS (Integrated Stand-by
Instrument System).

SA FAMILY INTRODUCTION COCKPIT PHILOSOPHY 27/24
27/24 MENU
When you work on aircraft, make sure that you obey all the AMM safety
procedures. This will prevent injury to persons and /or damage to the aircraft.
The following terms are used in the AMM and are defined as follows:
WARNING: calls attention to the use of material, processes, methods,
procedures or limits which must be followed precisely to avoid injury or
death to persons.
CAUTION: calls attention to methods and procedures which must be
followed to avoid damage to equipment.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
JACKING 35/38
35/38 MENU
Jacking
GENERAL
Aircraft lifted at forward jacking point with main landing gear wheels on ground.
The three jacking points, when equipped with jacking pads, are used to lift the
aircraft. The forward point “A” is located forward of the nose landing gear. The
points “B” are located outboard of the engine pylons. You can lift the aircraft at
the forward jacking point only, with the wheels of the main landing gear on the
ground.
A safety jack can be positioned at the rear of the aircraft after jacking to stabilize
the aircraft.
When the aircraft is weighed on landing gear jacks the following jacking points
must be used to lift it.
- 2 jacking points located in the main landing gear,
- 1 jacking point located in the nose landing gear.
LIMITATIONS
The open air jacking operation is limited if the wind velocity exceeds
permissible values which depend on aircraft gross weight and center of gravity
position. In any condition, the aircraft must be pointing upwind.
PRECAUTIONS
The three jacks have to be operated together.
As soon as the jacking operation is finished, position the safety jack to stabilize
the aircraft.
Do not use the safety jack to lift the aircraft.
JACKING POINTS
Jacking pads have to be used under the jacking points to spread the loads.
TOWING
The procedure for towing the aircraft with the nose gear from the front is the
following:
9 Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the landing gears.
9 NOTE: it is optional to install the landing gear safety devices when you
tow or push the aircraft during flight operations.
9 Make sure that the aircraft is stable and the engine cowls are closed.
9 Do not tow the aircraft if the dimension H is more than 300 millimeters. If
you do, you can cause damage to the internal centering cams of the nose
landing gear.
Depending on the configuration you are in, the aircraft needs to be energized
either using the APU, an engine running or using the tractor itself if it has a
Ground Power Unit (GPU).
The EIS start procedure must be done.
On the nose wheel steering deactivation electrical box, set the ground towing
control lever to the towing position and install the pin.
In the cockpit, on the upper ECAM display unit, the Nose WHEEL STEERinG
DISConnected message comes into view on the memo zone.
Check on the yellow brake pressure triple indicator that the accumulator pressure
pointer is in the green range. It is recommendable to pressurize the yellow
hydraulic system during the towing operation. Thus, the braking system will be
more efficient and safer.
When you have completed the towing operation, make sure that the nose wheels
are aligned with the aircraft centerline.
Put the wheel chocks in position in front of and behind the wheels of the nose
and main landing gear.
Set the parking brake control switch to ON and make sure that the pressure
indication on the yellow brake pressure triple indicator is correct. Check that the
parking brake light is on in the nose wheel steering deactivation electrical box.
Disconnect the towbar from the nose gear fitting.
On the nose wheel steering deactivation electrical box, remove the safety pin and
set the ground towing control lever to the normal position. In the cockpit the
message Nose WHEEL STEERinG DISConnected disappears.
On the lighting system, reset the EXTerior LighT NAVigation and LOGO switch
to OFF, reset the INTerior LighT DOME and the EXTerior LighT BEACON
switch to OFF.
Reset the communication system.
Depressurize the yellow hydraulic system.
Do the EIS stop procedure.
And finally de-energize the aircraft electrical circuits.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
During taxi of the aircraft, the following safety precautions must be taken into
account:
- Minimum turning radii,
Engine danger areas: safety precautions must be taken to avoid danger from
engine suction and exhaust areas. Access to the engine is only allowed through
the entry corridor. Note that the entry corridor must be closed for wind directions
greater than 90º.
There is no safe access corridor when the engine is running above minimum idle.
Noise danger areas: depending on the distance from the running engine and on
its power setting, it is necessary to wear ear protection and to respect maximum
time exposure.
GENERAL
This module covers the following subjects of the aircraft:
- parking, not more than 2 days,
- storage,
- and mooring of the landing gears.
The module is destined to cover the entire Single Aisle Airbus family, which
includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321 airplanes.
PARKING (NOT MORE THAN 2 DAYS)
In cold weather conditions, do the cold weather procedures
This section gives the procedure to park the aircraft in standard weather
conditions but:
- if the aircraft is parked in high wind conditions, a check of the aircraft
