HISTORY OF ABORTION

 An abortion is a procedure in which a woman, assisted by members of the

medical community or not, terminates her pregnancy, generally within the first
few months, before the embryo is old enough to live outside of the womb.
 Over several centuries and in different cultures, there is a rich history of women
helping each other to abort. Until the late 1800s, women healers in Western
Europe and the U.S. provided abortions and trained other women to do so,
without legal prohibitions.
 In 1803, Britain first passed antiabortion laws, which then became stricter
throughout the century.
 Abortion became a crime and a sin for several reasons. A trend of humanitarian
reform in the mid-19th century broadened liberal support for criminalization,
because at that time abortion was a dangerous procedure done with crude
methods, few antiseptics, and high mortality rates.

By the end of the 20th century, abortion was legally permitted to save the life of the
woman in 98 percent of the world's countries. In 2002, globally, abortions were legal
under the following circumstances:

 63 percent of countries allow abortions to preserve the woman's physical health.

 62 percent to preserve the woman's mental health.
 43 percent in the case of rape, sexual abuse, or incest.
 33 percent for economic or social reasons.
 27 percent on request.

 Around 56 million abortions are performed each year in the world, with about
45% done unsafely.
Two types of abortion (medical and surgical)

Medical abortion: The abortion pill

The abortion pill involves taking medicines to end the pregnancy.

Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion involves a minor operation that may be done with local anaesthetic,
with sedation or rarely with general anaesthetic.

Merits of Abortion if it become legalized.

For starters, abortions allow women the ability to choose whether or not they want to
have the baby they have been impregnated with.

Another advantage is the fact that the foster care system is already overloaded, and if
abortion was made illegal, there would tens of thousands of more kids being put into a
system that has too many kids, not enough stable foster parents, and even fewer
people who actually adopt.
Abortion prevent unwanted & unplanned pregnancies which prevents child neglect since
the mother does not want to have children at that moment in time.

Legal abortions protect women's health. Legal abortion not only protects women's lives,
it also protects their health

Unnecessary things like rape or incest.

Cons of Abortion

 Abortion is a form of murder and demeans the value of human life.

 Having an abortion done always carries the risk of not being able to become
pregnant ever again in life.

 Abortion can also lead to serious health complications, and in some cases the
worst case scenario can be death.
 Abortions cause psychological damage.
 Women should not be able to use abortion as a form of contraception.

 The abortion decision is often made by minors or young adults, who don't have
the maturity and life experiences to make good decisions.
